The thing with Anthrax is that, compared to the other three "Big Four Thrash Bands", there was nothing about their music that really stood out. Metallica had melody and passion, Megadeth had technicality and humor, Slayer had speed and aggression. But what did Anthrax have that neither of those bands had? A different state (New York instead of California) and two rap-metal songs. Granted, the band released some really great material during their thrash years (specifically Spreading The Disease, Among The Living, and especially Persistence Of Time). But it's not hard to see why they were the least successful (both critically and commercially) of the Big Four.

As for THIS album, I have about half of its songs burned on CD. I love Random Acts Of Senseless Violence and Fueled (btw, the "similar" Metallica song actually came out two years later  ). Riding Shotgun is pretty good but suffers from some really awkward lyrics ("Two steps forward! A-hundred steps back! We're going the wrong way! It's backwards! It's backwards!" - what a way to overemphasize a single point). Nothing is a great song, especially its chorus. I disagree with you about American Pompeii. That's actually a cool song, especially in the percussion section. Bare is a pretty decent ballad, but towards the end (when the song picks up), it starts to sound too much like an Alice In Chains ripoff. Black Lodge was definitely a better ballad IMO.

I thought the Reload songs were written at the same time as the Load ones? That was my thinking there, anyways.

Oh. Thanks for clarifying.

Actually, Fuel For Fire (the demo for Fuel) was recorded around the same time Stomp-442 came out. A little useless Metallica trivia for your intellectual pleasure. :P

Metallica had passion? Their music has always sounded the driest out of the four.

Even the worst moments from The Black album are better then anything Megadeth has ever done to these ears. I don't know Anthrax have always been the "fun" band out of them..

I never really cared for Anthrax much like Seinfield I find them boring and uninteresting compared to bands like Metallica,Megadeth and even Testament.

This is my favourite John Bush album. I know it's not universally loved but I think it caught me at the right time. As an Anthrax album it perhaps doesn't work as well as the older albums but taken on its own merits I think it's a belter.

My rate would be a little higher because I find Tester and I drop the ball to be very good. So a 74 would be more appropriated for me.

Good review!

I must respectfully disagree. The Black Album is probably one of the driest most emotionless albums I've ever heard. I feel the same way about And Justice for All. Megadeth always had more energy and....for lack of a better word, color, to their music. But I guess this all doesnt matter because both bands no suck immensely.
