I love this album. Yes, aside from the production (which is still not as bad as people make it out to be) I would consider this more of a classic. Metal Thrashing Mad.....both this version and the Belladonna remake are amazing. I've never heard any metal vocalists hold a note as long as these guys do on this song!

Also, the production on "Show No Mercy" and "War and Pain" is not much better than "Fistful of Metal". "Show No Mercy" (again, another classic album) is thin as far as the guitars and the drums are muddy. "War and Pain"? Probably my least favorite Voivod album because it was so different from anything else they did and I prefer later stuff like Angel Rat, Outer Limits and Nothingface. Also a very raw album.

As if you gave Divine Intervention and 88 and this only got a 74. Switching those scores around would be much much more accurate.

Neil Turbin, a deranged shrieking harridan who would have done better for himself redubbing the screams of horror movie totty than his “singing” here.

Awful review.

I'd easily give this album a high 80's rating.
Turbin's steel-belted voice kicks all kinds of ass, as does the music.

That.

Not a classic imo, but a great thrash album in the 85-89 range.

Howling furies is a classic song in Anthrax, and I really like the "Judas meets thrash" song Death from above.

There're some weak points "I'm 18", the pointless instrumental "Across The River" or the song "Anthrax", but overall is far better than the review indicates.

Obviously everyone disagrees with my less than rosy-tinted view of this album, but it's interesting that were this and Divine Intervention to be released nowadays, everyone would love DI and hate FOM. The songs are poor, you all have to admit it; much better Speed Metal was released.

Ah, but those other albums fit the production much better. WAP is still a punch in the mouth; FOM is anything but, and sounds weak rather than aged.

A great review, surely, just one that you disagree with.

Its awful in that the opinions expressed within are not good.

But seriously, a 74? I find it amusing that a Paramore album is reviewed and given a higher score than this album. All I can do is ask....what the fuck?

Since this is Anthrax's only good album I cannot understand how this gets a 74 and Divine Intervention gets an 88. And to say that this album has aged dreadfully is nonsense. All the shitty generic retro thrasher albums rip off this style to no end, and yet they get higher scores....the more I write about this review the angrier I get. So I will stop.

I disagree intensely with the review. Writing style is not bad, but that's just because I'm a nice guy. If you love heavy metal then you should in theory love this album and what it represents.

One more thing, the album should get a score in the high 80's just for the song "Panic."

I see this sentiment a lot around here. I guess it bears repeating that DIFFERENT REVIEWERS HAVE DIFFERING OPINIONS.

Seriously, do you think we all sit around and decide on a score before a review goes up? No, the decision of the score is left solely up to the guy that does the review. Comparing the scores of two different albums, unless they were reviewed by the same person, doesn't make any sense.

Sorry HT, don't think I'm singling you out. There are a lot of people who do the same thing, and it irks me about as much as this review has irked you.

YEAH. And this is far from Anthrax's only good album. What a crazy thing to say. I dealt with the other points in the review, but pure MEEEETTTAAAAL attitude can be portrayed in better ways than a shitty vocalist and OTT artwork.

Plus, you're cross because I scored this ten points lower than you would. WTF?

There is a fundamental disagreement between you and I about this album that pretty much makes any discussion about it pointless: I think this is Anthrax's only good album; you don't. So that's that.

I also don't think Neil Turbin is a bad singer at all. In fact he's the best singer Anthrax has had. He had great range and could sing with power unlike Joey Belladonna who sounds like Don Dokken's little sister.

So based on those two points, there's really no sense in getting into it about this album since we have such differing view points. I respect your opinion, but, I do think its wrong. :D .

On a purely stylistic point, the review was not poorly written. That should somewhat ease the pain of hearing what I have to say.

Have to agree with the vast majority of people posting here. While it does come down to personal taste, and Fistful of Metal isn't exactly the pinnacle of all things metal, I find 74 to be quite low and the review to be overly critical. But then again, that's what personal tastes are all about.
