Yeah, you're right. IMO the vocals work better on this album than they did on Focus.

+1, it's also cool when they have the clean and growled vocals at the same time. Not to mention the sick drumming.

This is definitely less of a death metal album than Focus. Granted, it's debatable whether Focus could really be considered a "death metal" record (I think part of the reason why it gets that label is because, in 1993, the genre was still sort of in its infant stages), but this album definitely doesn't fall under that category. It's a prog metal album, plain and simple. And, fortunately, it's a very good one. I'd say Focus is a little bit better, but only because I personally find the songs to be more instantly memorable. Otherwise, the two albums are about on par in terms of quality.

What I like about Cynic is that they manage to show technical proficiency and musical complexity without being too wanky or showy about it (something I can't say for a lot of other prog metal bands - even Dream Theater, Lord bless them, is guilty of this). It's music you can be floored by while still relaxedly enjoying it.

i never muched liked them although I will say that they are good musicians, too many other bands do the same thing they do but do it wayy more aggressively then Cynic.

I've actually really come to love this album. I enjoy that it isn't so "aggressive." It has everything I want in a prog album, including occasional death vocals.

like the guy above you said, most prog metal bands these days spend to much time sweep sweep, finger tap, dive bomb. Although it sounds cool it gets boring and eventually all songs tend to sound alike cuz there's a lack of melody. Besides, Cynic isn't about being aggressive, it's musical exploration. Which in my opinion is what real prog is. Its bands like Cynic, Ulver, Meshuggah, Arcturus, and Maudlin of the Well that keeps music interesting
