Really? I think they're quite tame in comparison to other funeral doom bands.

i don't know much about the genre but if Ahab is the star band then it really must be lackluster...Are there any bands that aren't just reliant on a shitty 15 minute song and terrible attempts at atmosphere? Got any good recommendations?

I'd hardly call them the star band, but...

Give diSEMBOWELMENT, Esoteric and Tyranny a try. They're probably the best you're going to find.

any band that has 20 albums or more, Jesus, do they think I have the time and money to listen and buy to their formulaic predictable existence?

What I was going to say. Really Ahab is nothing compared to the better funeral doom bands.
I'd like to add to that list: Wormphlegm-In an Excruciating Way Infested With Vermin and Violated by Executioners Who Practise Incendiarism and Desanctifying the Pious and Tomb of The Ancient King (with members from Tyranny) for some of the sickest doom songs i've ever heard.

With you on Six Feet Under, the very definition of pointlessness, but Da Corpse usually manage to be solid, and their last-but-one was stellar.

Besides, it's not like they put out albums over the years thinking 'bwahaha, people in the future are going to have to buy all of these'.

I would add Evoken, Ea, Shape of Despair, Skepticism, and Comatose Vigil to the list. You guys got most of the really good ones though.

Yeah the ones Adam listed are also a definite must. Great great stuff. I have to be in a special kind of mood though, to listen to these bands.

 I'll be looking forward to that day then. Although I have been sexually active for like 12 years or something and am at present in a fairly serious relationship, so it is probable that I'll never get around to it.

Yeah, sure it all comes down to taste. It wasn't really meant as a jab at your taste either. Your avatar just reminded me of them.

I always thought that they sucked pretty hard, but seeing them live some time ago really made me aware of how horrible their brand of BM-edgy, overdramatised emo rock is

I'm going to say with a straight face that I think pre-Chaos AD Sepultura is overrated. Granted, Arise and Beneath The Remains are good albums. But they're also quite repetitive and vague IMO. I can't listen to either album without eventually feeling like the songs blend into one another, at which they become almost indistinguishable (barring some unique intros for songs like Beneath The Remains and Altered State).

Schizophrenia, Beneath the Remains and Arise destroy everything else Sepultura has ever done and ever will do. The fact that you say it is overrated, makes me think that you have a serious lack of knowledge when it comes to music.

very much so

but to call classics of the thrash/death genre overrated is very stupid/silly

ask any brutal metal fan from brazil if they feel the first couple Sep albums are overrated, they'll want your testicles on a platter.

Just for the sake of argument, "overrated" doesn't mean "bad." Actually, I like BTR and Arise. I just personally find them to be overpraised, and I'd ultimately take something like Reign In Blood or Rust In Peace over either album.

Reign in Blood = overrated, one of the most overrated albums of the thrash heyday. With Master of Puppets of course.

IMO
