Very good album. Grind is a crushing opener. I have to disagree with Godam being a forgettable track. It is one of the strongest. Head Creeps is wow ! Again, Frogs and Heaven Beside You, all fine tracks. I agree with Nothing Song and So Close Being kinda fillers although they do have their moments.

I agree that this is a better album than many people give it credit for. Granted, it's no Dirt or Facelift. But I thought it was a fitting farewell for the band. My favorite songs include Grind, Heaven Beside You, Head Creeps (my overall favorite), Shame In You, and Over Now. Frogs is also interesting in that it's almost a musical suicide note. Listen to the song from start to finish, and it becomes pretty clear that Layne didn't have much time left in this world. I even like So Close, particularly the song's chorus, even though it only consists of laying singing "Yeaaaaaaah, so close now" followed by some brief cooing.

One thing I would've mentioned, personally, is the album's more modern production and mainstream sound. Shame In You, in particular, is probably the most MTV-friendly song the band ever did (that's not a knock against it, by the way, as it's nonetheless a great song).

Heard most of the songs but never really listened to this album.

Me? I don't remember saying anything negative about Grind, I love that song. Not one of my top three on the album, but still a great song.

And Seinfeld, that's an interesting take on Shame in You. I suppose the vocals are a bit radio friendly, but I've always felt the guitars sounded off kilter enough to make it a fairly inaccessible track. Awesome song though, some of the chorus vocals still give me goosebumps.

I like the almost Urban-sounding guitarwork in Shame In You. Kind of reminds me of a New York City bus stop for some reason.

First of all : excellent review!

Tripod is such a good album, still very fresh to my ear, 14 years later.

Head Creeps and Frog are my 2 picks from it.
