Really a very good album, though not as good as the previous release. I added my score...

I have to disagree on the production. On "Nephram-Ka" and "Darkened Shrines" especially, the vocals were simply buried by the drums and blazing guitars. I mean, the only way you could understand a word was by following a lyrics sheet. On this CD the vocals are much more clearer and rational. Sometimes on "Shrines", I thought they were simply gruntiung away without actually saying anything the production was so average.

And doesn't "User-Maat-Re" sound like Unas II?

Ehh, I'll have to hear the album before I pass judgement. Though I have to admit, Lashed At The Stick was a pretty good song.

Should be interesting seeing how the fanboys respond to this review (after "In Flamer" slammed you for your Chimaira review), eh Dead Machine?

I would give it a much higher score. Probably in the very high 80's, borderline 90's. But I've always been a huge Nile fan.

Don't know why, but that review actually met my expectations of the new Nile album... sensed that it would be like described.

Haven't heard it yet, though.

i still haven/t heard this one... but from your review i get the feeling they've turned into self pardoy...

intro, violence, @epic@ break, violence...

also the song titles. i hope they don't expect to be taken seriously anymore.

I think this, like every Nile album is badass. They're like Slayer, why the hell would they change. Their sound is so overwhelmingly brutal, inventive, and awesome. If anything, this album is better than Darkened Shrines because they didn't utterly rip off a Candlemass riff without crediting it. I thought it sounded awesome, but it was still kinda cheating when it comes to songwriting. And "Lashed To The Slave Stick" does show a progression and a new style of songwriting. It sounds like some sort of sick, brutal Egyptian dance. Not to mention, it's ridiculously heavy but also catchy. I fucking love this album, and I really don't see any flaws besides the flaws that can be attributed to the death metal genre as a whole. Then again, I'm more into classic metal like Iron Maiden than brutal death, but I do love death metal. Maybe I just haven't heard enough death metal, but this album kicks the shit out of me.

this band slays live. and this album is my favorite of theirs. the production is miles beyond shrines, and the guitar work is just two dudes trading killer licks for like an hour. good stuff.

Post subject: Eh, it's just OK

Obviously Nile is an extremely talented and heavy band but this record is just OK. I couldn't listen to it all the way through nor can I even name a single track that stands out. It's like one big Egyptian history lesson and the vocals are mixed way in the back so it's tough to follow the lyric cheet. Compared to some of the other extreme metal albums that have come out this is really just OK. I would love to really like this album but I just don't. The drums overpower every other sound. The guitars are barly audible and I have to use the bass reducer setting to make the album sound decent. Bad production.

I always thought Nile did "Unas slayer of the gods" as a kind of homage to Candlemass, I mean the steal from Gothic stone/Well of souls was that obvious I couldn't think otherwise. But maybe you're right, perhaps they should have credited it, because that song apealed to many people and I'm sure many of them didn't know that it is basicaly variations on a Candlemass idea, and they give all the credit to Nile. Not that I mind one bit what Nile did, I think they had an interesting idea and pulled it off very well, they certainly produced one of the highlights of their careers with this song.
As for the last album, I'm not that pleased, as far as I'm concerned it's their weakest yet.

I like this one a lot! Nile confirmed once again their status among the permiere extreme acts of nowadays Metal.

I rated the new one pretty high. Very good album! To me, it seems like Nile is like clockwork -- you know what you're gonna get. High quality DM. I think anybody who thought their last album ruled would enjoy this one too. Maybe the only disappointment is that it's not a huge progression. But like Aceface said, who expects/wants Slayer to change?

These guys are probably the most consistently good DM band out there right now. Surprising considering the lineup changes.

My problem with the fact that they don't change is because they built their whole career on change.

It seems a bit ridiculous to me that they refuse further innovation after carving out a little comfortable niche OF innovation.

Smacks of hypocrisy.
