I think this review is pretty spot-on. Although I'd rate this album a little higher (may be an 84/100?) personally. Strangely, I actually find the slower and more radio-friendly songs on CW to be better than the thrashier ones, because they sound more natural and "at home" on the album. Trust and Almost Honest are two of my all-time favorite Megadeth songs. Sin, Use The Man (yeah, I like this song, even though you basically trashed it in your review), Mastermind, A Secret Place, and even Have Cool Will Travel are also great songs.

The Disintegrators, Vortex, and FFF, on the other hand, always struck me as Megadeth simply trying too hard to stick with their thrash roots. As if they were trying to say, "Hey, we may have gone commercial, but we can still rock out like we did on Rust In Peace!" Not that they're bad songs, mind you (actually, I like Vortex). They just sound a little out-of-place on the album. She-Wolf, however is a very cool song IMO. But I wouldn't really call it "thrashy," with that melodic chorus.

I agree with you about I'll Get Even, though. That's pretty much a throwaway track, although I do like the bridge in the middle.

I really dig this album. I still maintain that Megadeth's best run was from Rust In Peace to this album, peaking with Youthanasia.

And no mention of Dave reclaiming the "Motorbreath" riff on "FFF?"

I fucking love this album. One of my personal favorite 'deth albums. Use the Man is awesome. So is She-Wolf, Trust, Almost Honest, Mastermind. Some of the tracks aren't the greatest but it's solid 90s quasi-thrash; the great songs exceedingly outweigh the mediocre.

A decent album that gets overrated because it's got Megadeth written on the front.

+1. I would give this album a score of 87/100. A very strong release. Agreed with Zad that I'll Get Even should never have made it to this album or any album for that matter. It's horrible.

this is very true...especially if you don't like thrash metal.

Hm, I like it even more than Youthanasia, because it was a little bit more thrash metal (Disintegrators, FFF...) and the songs sounded more fresh and not so thick produced.

My favorite 'deth album. Megadeth, to me, were always more about the melodies and lead guitar lines rather than crushing riffs (although, Take No Prisoners has some of the coolest thrash riffs ever) and in that respect, this album shines more than any of the "classic" albums. It's all about the vocal melody and the guitar harmonies and never being too self-indulgent.

I can't believe people are rating this higher than their classic material. This album is decent, but some songs sound like they should be on the soft rock top 40. That is not what Megadave is about.

This was my first Megadeth-album. Sucks.

Nobody is saying it's better than the classic shit. It's just a solid album which some seem to love and others hate.

Nobody came out and said it, but it sure sounds like you fuckers are implying it.

In terms of consistent songwriting, it's better than the first three, but not Rust In Peace. There are certain songs on the first three that blow every song on this one away, but I find the first three albums to be extremely spotty and overrated. Cryptic Writings, while far from a thrash album—and ever farther from being as influential as the early stuff—has quality songwriting from beginning to end.

But this shouldn't even be compared to the classic stuff. It's too different.

This album has something special, at least for me. There are a couple of songs i don't enjoy very much, but the rest is very good, with Trust and She Wolf being absolutely amazing. Very solid album imo, of course it's not in the same league as RIP, but the good thing is that is a very enjoyable album to hear overall, and that is not something easy to achieve. For example, even though i think that Youthanasia is more constant and has better songs overall, i still prefer to listen this album.
I give this one 85 points.
