It's become quite addictive, liking it a lot.

Nope, don't understand the buzz. There's some fun parts and good riffs, but overall it's overprocessed to the point of all notions of musicianship being lost.

Definitely disagree with that. Seen the live clip of Fisheye? No faulting the musicianship at all.

You could say the same with most albums that make heavy use of electronics, IMO.

One thing that would have made it immune to this type of criticism would have been if they'd put the fast unison saxophone lines into their version of 21st Century Schizoid Man. As it is, I've listened to it x nuber of times assuming I just hadn't been paying attention, but it isn't there! The one flaw in this album.

Nope, haven't seen it yet. I'm just a teensy bit disgruntled at having bought this after all the above raving and then not liking it as much. It's not the ill-judged purchase of Coheed & Cambria I inflicted upon myself in a similar way last year, though, but still. I've listened to Blackjazz about five times and it's still not connecting, does it take more attempts to digest or should I give up on it and move on?

Also, are there other albums of theirs that are less overprocessed and that might be better for me to start off with?

 It does take a while to digest fully, but I loved it from the first listen. Their previous album, Grindstone (also reviewed) is less mental and easier to get into, although still a very prog and experimental album.

There other albums probably are a bit more organic, I would say, although they are also much less metal. This definitely seems to be their "let's play metal!" album.

Aww I was hoping for a whole album like "In The Kingdom of Kitsch You Will be a Monster" (the song) but this one has annoying screaming instead of wacky fun vox. Will give it another chance sometime.

I saw these guys live last night, and they've totally won me over. Fantastic performance, the front man has tons of charisma, and everything just sounded much better than on the album. I realise now that it's the production on Blackjazz that is inadequate. It's too digital sounding, too clean.

Coming back to this album, it really needs more saxophone solos.

I've never heard any of their pure jazz albums. I just heard the last couple before this, which I thought were good, but it seems clear they were definitely building up to this one.

I still think it's great, but the more I listen to it the more I wish they had made more use of Muneby's horn skillz.
