Hope Not Hate just booted me from their Facebook page for challenging a statement made in their comments about UAF and the SWP being antisemetic.

Me neither. The rise of the BNP and EDL etc is all the left's fault, the general consensus seemed to be. My comment wasn't like a 'how dare you fascist sellout traitors imply that the glorious worker's party...' just 'um, evidence pls' and apparently that's not an acceptable question.

You know me, hardly a fan of UAF or the other, but calling a party started by a Jew (no?) that still holds vigils outside desecrated Jewish cemetaries (iirc) antisemetic is ridiculous.

Edit: TBH, reading around, they do seem to work together generally, so maybe this is just some prat at Facebook. Seems a bit  though, considering it's their official page and everything.

I don't know whether the news has reach you yet, friends, but in Belgium...

About two thousand people seeking political (or rather, economic) asylum have not received a place to stay by our hospitable yet spatially hard-pressed government, and supreme court has sanctioned the state for this. 55 illegal immigrants, fed up with not automatically receiving a roof above their heads, have put up a lawsuit which has turned out to their advantage: the government must now pay them 500 euros a day until accommodation can be found for them.

In other words, they're now living it large in expensive hotels in Brussels. Excellent!

How terrible. The hotels should offer to put them up free of charge, no-one has any sense of civic or national responsibility any more.

Forgot you were a Belgian, by the by; did our Nigel Farage make it into the national news the other week with his characteristic rudeness towards you and yours?

Of course he made the news, and with good reason. Farage was right on most points. We're kinda glad he's no longer our prime minister and has moved on to a political sphere we're not all that well acquainted with.

Bah, there's no offending some people.

Incidentally, a big thumbs up to the forum Yanks for Obama finally getting something done. The amount of right-wing whining due to follow will keep the rest of the world entertained for months.

You know, I read that earlier, thought 'what a bunch of tossers BA seem to be', read the letter and couldn't be bothered scrolling through all the signatories. Anyways, told you, The Centre For Social Cohesion will be calling on you before you know it.

Heh, just bought the print version and my name falls within the 111 that you have to go to the website to see. So, no name in print for me.

Dude, if all you wanted was your name on a website, I could hook you up with a sweet metal reviewing gig. No need to go trolling giant multinationals.

Always suspected him of being a wrong 'un, as you know. Any clues as to what the fella actually said about him?

Dunno, maybe he took the piss out of his beret.

Keep military types away from politics, say I. All that discipline and "do as I say" attitude.

I totally agree but then I think about how it was the media and the military which overthrew Chavez and put him in jail for a day and then I can rationalize his quasi-Stalin paranoia. I'm siding with Zizek and saying Chavez is a huge step forward but ultimately destined to be a failure.

When you say habitat, you mean segregation dontcha? How cute. If you didn't think people could mesh culturally then how is America possible? People can blend it's alright. Miscegenation won't be our doom.

Is America still possible? With your plethora of problems I doubt it. When your minorities become majorities - which is happening soon, right? - we'll talk again.
America isn't collapsing soon. We have economic problems based on Reagan and Bush shit policies, and lazy politicians warping cultural issues into dire clashes which is bullshit. America has no more Mexican illegal workers than it had illegal Chinese and Irish workers making the railroad. Minorities becoming majorities doesn't fucking matter unless the power relation shifts and it probably won't. Whether they're Hispanic or White it doesn't matter when they vote. Hopefully, Obama passes this healthcare reform and can start some amnesty policies. Bring on the burritos, America will adapt and blend culturally. I'm sure we'll be fine or please tell me how I am wrong.

But there is a fundamental difference between the Irish and Chinese immigrations and the Hispancization of the Southwest USA. Mexican immigrants share a massive contiguous border with their home country; thus they do not assimilate like the immigrant waves of the past where a couple generations in the immigrants would have forgotten their old tongue.

The Mexicans in the Southwest (and the Hispanics in Miami, Florida) are involved in a long and spreading process of eroding English language dominance, which I don't see being arrested anytime soon, if ever. It is quite possible for gradually growing border communities to feature Hispanics who live their whole in Spanish-speaking communities and never learn English. However, your point about power relations is still noted: I don't see the necessity to learn English in order to make a good living in the USA changing anytime soon, either.
Could you say the autonomy of Hispanic culture in the Southwest is due to their lower socio-economic status? Not having stable jobs and not being able to earn enough money to live a decent life forces them to rely on the family structure for support? This would paint the family structure as being a way to harbor Hispanic culture and prevent it's dissolution after immigrating. Embracing capitalism's ability to wipe out the family through the economic independence which it creates while being respectful towards the immigrants as workers with respectable wages, providing them legal status and the assurance that comes with it would be a step towards dissolving the solidity of Hispanic culture in America. Am I way off base or is this a possibility?

But these controversies were pale abstractions compared with the weather—which, for much of the United States, involved punishing snowstorms. No matter that North America represents less than five percent of the earth’s surface, or that global-warming theory predicts increased precipitation as ocean water evaporates, or that this year’s storms along the Eastern Seaboard are likely due to a change in weather patterns caused by the dramatic warming of Greenland. It’s hard to accept that things are heating up when one is digging out, as the Virginia Republican Party mockingly put it, from “twelve inches of global warming.”
This came from a left leaning journal. If MSNBC deserved my respect they would've been broadcasting a message like this non-stop last season. Instead, I had to listen to dumbass conservatives saying 'it snowed therefore global warming is bunk'. Sadly but not surprisingly, the one place I did consistently hear this from was The Daily Show and Colbert's peek-a-boo-ologist bit.
