I think Vertebrae put them comfortably over the line of Progressive Metal.

And their seventeen years of existence prior to that? First ten/fifteen years at least are totally Viking.

Viking as in Folky Black? It is hard to categorize Frost and Eld but Vikingligr Veldi (despite the title) is about as pure Norwegian Black as you will come across. I feel the primacy of metal definitions is based on what the music is--lyrics are a very minor consideration. This explains why I laughed at the coining of 'winter metal' for Immortal gaining traction.

And 'Below the Lights' was more technical than Vertebrae, and anything else they've done--I'd say they've been progressive something metal since Mardraum.

But Enslaved is just one of those bands that spawns these unanswerable debates, so perhaps Grutle and Ivar are laughing at us somewhere while they spin that lost Pink Floyd album when the master recording fell into the Thames in 71.

I suppose 'folk' for Enslaved is 'viking' for everyone else, really.
