You know what, Zad? You've actually inspired me: I'm going to pick up Conquer tomorrow.

Dark Ages was still better.

Eh. Dark Ages beats Omen, but it's not up to Conquer. Y'all seriously underestimated Conquer - one of the best modern metal albums around, and a serious surprise that Soulfly pulled it off. But that's another thread...

I have heard it (almost two years ago), but I never really got around to buying it until now. I'll post my thoughts in the Conquer review board after listening to it tomorrow.

Eh it's still better than anything Exodus has put out lately.

I like Omen, but I wouldn't go so far. The Songs are very short and they are very similar and at least the current Exodus is better. Though Conquer is better than Exhibit A.

And Conquer here, Omen there, I like it that Max is going away from the bingo bongo nu metal jungle route to his roots and Omen has more in common with Arise than with Roots.

It's really quite a shame that people still associate Soulfly with their nu-metal origins, since they certainly aren't a nu-metal band anymore (and haven't been since Prophecy). In fact, just because of their nu-metal beginnings, Metal-Archives STILL has yet to put a Soulfly page up. What gives?

That's because Metal Archives sucks.

Is Dark Ages worth picking up, or should I just go with Conquer and forget DA? I'm trying to decide which one to go with.

Yes, but Conquer's even better in my opinion. See fig. 1 below.

Because it wasn't only the first Soulfly albums but also Chaos AD and Roots which went heavy in that direction.

They went 90s Groove Metal, with a bit of Nu influence on Roots, I'll admit. But Soulfly was where the Nu Metal started properly, with the Fred Durst guest spots and that.

Yeah, but the music of Chaos AD and Roots was IMO more or less the base of the Soulfly sound. When you see a Soulfly concert, then songs like Roots or Refuse/Resist doesn't sound different and are more Soulfly than some of the new stuff of Conquer or Omen.

And I wouldn't forget Cavalera Conspiracy - Inflikted, because it's not much different from the last Soulfly albums.

All true. But people talk about Roots like it's a Limp Bizkit album, which is stupid and always annoys me.

Hm, but it is a Limp Bizkit album. (just kidding)

The title track was great, but the rest... just too many experiments.

Funny thing is, that Soulfly could call them today Sepultura and nobody could complain, because the sound is more original Sepultura than anything from Sepultura after Arise.

Sepultura, today, is about as distant from Arise as you can get. They're now for all intents and purposes a punk/hardcore band rather than a metal band.

The sad thing is that, if Max and Igor reunited with Sepultura, they'd probably be totally relevant in the metal community again. That's all it would take! But, without them, they're basically toiling in obscurity, while rival band Soulfly is riding high.

It's experimental, but not Nu-Metal, at all. Only recently have Sepultura post-Max been overtaken by Soulfly - Against and Nation are pretty good hardcore albums that build upon the Roots sound, not brilliant, but not the Nu-Metal shite that is early Soulfly.

And yes, Seinfeld. If it wasn't for Andreas Kisser being a stubborn bastard, bless, I'm sure there'd already have been a reunion. Yet albums like Dante and A-Lex sound more like Sepultura trying to prove its worth against Soulfly, rather than just making kickass albums for Max to match up against. Sad, really. I've heard everything both bands did and count myself as a fan of both, when all is said and done.
