the Internet really is serious business

I really hate when people use this as an excuse for being an ass.
We all know Internet shouldn't be taken too seriously but
can we at times have conversations without having someone always trying to get attention and derailing threads just for the sake of it.
It gets old pretty fast you know.

Regardless of whether the thread originally had merit, Legacy started the ad-hominem attacks. Is it really rocket science to just disagree with the OP without resorting to name-calling?

There should be, like, a way to make people not take everything so seriously. Whatever it is, I'm gonna invent it. And then I'll become rich.

Very rich.

As to the topic at hand, I think it is practically impossible to measure. Perception had me comparing Pink Floyd in the 70s to Eminem in the 00s and I thought the OP had some real merit.

Then I found this list on 'the 10 best-selling artists of the 70s'.

Pretty underwhelming, if you ask me. Look here http://www.mademan.com/mm/10-best-selling-artists-70s.html

V had a good point about radio in the 70s though. Long before all the Clear Channel repeating tape radio stations you see today.

Well, back in the 70's, sure there were some kickass tunes, but it wasn't all kick ass all the time; yes, you had Rainbow, Deep Purple, ZZ, Zep, UFO, Halen, Elton John, The Who, Stones, Heart, Edgar Winter, GFR, Pat Travers, Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Allman Brothers, Dylan, Neil Young, Aerosmith, The Police, Nugent and so on... also, you had Bowie, Mott The Hoople, The Tubes, T-Rex, Sweet etc. (which is good)... all the old british invasion bands making an appearance now and then... you even had a little AM Gold to lighten things up a bit: America, Todd Rundgren, blahblah. These are just a few of the bands that I remember getting a lot of airplay; on the other hand you had Cheap Trick, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, Journey, Styx, The fucking Knack, and a whole slew of other lame acts gaying up the FM airwaves.
But I do agree that overall, the radio fare of yesteryear was better than that of today.

Thank you Banshee you're one of the few posters left here that I still have respect for. A very well thought out post and that's what I'm looking for whether you agree with the original post or not.

So let's get back on topic shall we folks.

People still listen to the radio? I have only heard tales of it being used as background music at work.

I grew up with 95.5 KLOS / 94.7 KMET (Los Angeles) the latter being much less format driven and allowing in letting their DJs pick and choose what they wanted to play with a lot less chatter, and much more laid back (Jim Ladd was one cool motherfucker).
It was a different time, with different tunes, thats really all I can say.

The only radio station I ever listen to anymore is a station that plays a bunch of Jazz stuff.

And by Jazz, I don't mean Kenny G and all that bullshit.

Stuff like Oscar Peterson and John Pizzarelli.

Fuck yeah.

Speaking of Oscar Peterson: Holy shit.

I think rather than 'idiotic', just hopelessly unanswerable.
