If you care about the audio quality:

I don't personally know any of the specs, but check out exactly what *Integrated Circuit* Op Amp they are using and research those. That is going to have the biggest influence on the sound by far. OP amps range anywhere from extremely accurate, but cold and bright sounding to extremely coloured, warm and more than likely bass heavy.

Get the one with the most accurate one you can find. People are generally unaware that any sort of bass boosting will result in a delay in it's arrival to your ear because we do not hear in a linear way. The warm mids and soft highs (usually boosted in the 4-8K area and rolled off gradually after that) everyone loves are most definitely going to be phasey, will completely destroy any sort of stereo or spacial effects.

Trust me on this. After spending the last decade colouring the shit out of audio with DSP's and subsequently learning that altering the sound in any way is going to have devastating consequences to your perception and enjoyment of the music.

Go with the most accurate and "passive" equipment you can find. It is funny. Your ears may say "not enough bass" but if you leave it alone the bass will not only reveal itself, but be much bigger sounding since you didn't screw the relationship between the highs and lows of the kick drum for instance. Your brain does not like information that is harmonically distorted, even if it produces a pleasant timbre. A lot of the time, really extensive colouring of sound will affect your perception of the pitch of the instrument itself. Off key notes are the most unpleasant thing in the world.

Do your homework on the techincal specs. Honestly its an uphill battle with mass market consumer goods that are designed to impress within a few minutes, but I am suggesting to avoid bells and whistles and get the least colourful player you can find. I guarantee you will listen to music much more.

So, crap players are better at playing music than more expensive ones?

Someone recommend me a mobile phone, my Samsung's falling apart. And no, I don't want a fucking iPhone.

This is what I have, I think.

You keep saying that, but you're the only one I've ever heard say that about iPods.

I've got 20+ videos on my iPod. It's not hard.

If I can do it, you can.

See, this is what I hate about Apple. "I can do it" - but no how, or explanation of the conversion programs etc, just unbearable smugness that you've joined Jobs' little cult.

Have you ever had an iPod before? Cause it's pretty intuitive...the only thing about the iPod is that it doesn't play many file formats, but if you've got the vid in the right format, it's very easy to put it on your iPod.

And btw, there's a lot of help available for these things. It's the most popular MP3 player by millions of units, so the resources are pretty endless...if you're looking for an MP3 player and a phone at the same time, it'd be ridiculous not to at least consider the iPhone. Go to an Apple store and check it out, and if you still don't like it, then you can come back and bitch and I won't care too much.

*sigh*

I've only badmouthed them in every post I've made here, so obviously I secretly want an Apple product, right? NO. I want something I can drag and drop files to without going through some bullshit conversion process - before I can even play WMAs! I've known people with them, I've used them, if I wanted to pay hundreds above my budget for a friggin iPhone/pod/whatever I would do so.

iPods have no hard reset switch. This means when they freeze...and they WILL, I promise you.... you have to wait for the godamned battery to die. Very frustrating.

My iPod, and the corresponding software, are the only Apple designed products of any sort that I own, and I can't stress how quickly I want to change to ANY OTHER mp3 player. Apple design chews nuts. Simple to a flaw.

Um my iPod has froze before and you hold in the play/pause button as well as the button in the middle. Viola, hard reset.

I'm not getting the iPod hate, it's so goddamn easy to figure out. Take 5 minutes out of your hectic schedule and you will forever be at ease.

I've had other MP3/4 players and they are pretty terribad compared to iPods.

Also I have an iPhone, using it right now, incredibly simple to get up and running.

Well now, that's just a blanket statement.

iPhone 3GS > Android 1.5 ....I agree there.

Android 2.2 >>>>>>>>>> iPhone 3GS

When the iPhone 4G hits I'll reassess, but that's definitely how it stands now.

I don't care enough to look at 3Gs or 4G or 1.5 or 2.2

my iPhone works hella fine, and I love it.

nothing will convince me any different.

Yeah, well, Android being better (in my opinion) doesn't mean that iPhones are shit.

I hang a lot of shit on Apple but at the end of the day there's a lot of companies out there producing some really high-end phones and we're lucky to have any of them, really.

Hey, if one of y'all rich mofos wanted to buy me an iFoan, I wouldn't say no.

http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/s ... OTY2ODA2OQ

But I CANNOT AFFORD to throw away over £400 when I can get something for less than a quarter of the price which does the same thing just as well. 50% of the price of Apples is the brand name, which I care not for, not being into fashion statements generally. I am, after all, metal, not some ass-kissing whore!

Which Android foan you got, Thrash?

People who have iphones just say that their iphones work very well for them and get defensive because they know they have paid 2-3 times the money they should have for such specifications.
