Well, why not? If it's regulated well, it would cut down on violence, crime, and potentially STDs and whatnot. I need to do more research on the subject, but as it stands, I'm more for legalizing prostitution than I am against it.

One thing about objectivism bugs me .. what if "reality" revealed objectively that unfettered laissez faire capitalism and individual freedom was in fact immoral? Would it not be their duty to recognize it?

It can't because of how they define their ethics but yeah I get what you're saying. People that think she is really saying something not already contained in Adam Smith and Nietzsche is just being daft. On a side note, The Fountainhead is as good as she gets and the more I look back on it, the more I wonder why I liked it when I first read it. Anthem is simplistic drivel and Atlas Shrugged is tedious, copy and paste bullshit.

Noodz is so right though.

Prostitution is legal in Switzerland. They all get HIV tests regularly, they fuck better than the local girls and they cost less than them too.

I've never gone to one, it just makes sense to legalize it.

The only arguments against legalising prostitution that I can see are moral ones - is it right to sell sex? No doubt Trapt will pop in to say something about how society already sells sex in various forms, but I don't see how legalisation will be less moral than allowing them to continue underground in a form which is much more harmful to the people involved.

Since moral issues will not stop things from happening I guess it'll be better to ensure that things go as smoothly and legally as can be.

That's the Dutch credo about things and the Dutch are not all idiots...

Letting your own personal moral convictions impede other people from engaging in sexual activities of their choice is an infringement of basic human rights and absolutely ridiculous.

Not legalizing prostitution is an infringement upon basic human rights?

You understand how absolutely absurd that statement is, right?

Heh, it sounds better if you say that stopping people having consensual sex is an infringement, and if there's a financial transaction involved, so what?

As long as both "partners" in said transaction agree and are willing to complete it, of course.

But legalizing prostitution isn't just about two consenting adults having sex and one getting money for it. It would lead to a systematic and large scale use of women as objects for whoever is willing to pay. The idea that the government would test prostitutes for STD's and then send them back to the sex shop is absolutely revolting. Women become prostitutes because they are either desperate for money or somehow feel trapped in that kind of lifestyle because of drugs, abuse as a child, violence, etc. By legalizing and regulating it, a government would essentially make it more socially acceptable.

Not to mention that if you have to pay for sex you are a complete loser.

A lot of the problems you mention are because of how grubby it sounds, which I can sympathise with. Just going through your points and addressing them individually and dispassionately:

1. "It would lead to a systematic and large scale use of women as objects for whoever is willing to pay." - eh? How would it do that? Not sure what you mean by this.
2. "The idea that the government would test prostitutes for STD's and then send them back to the sex shop is absolutely revolting." - Well, presumably they'd have some sort of certificate proving their health supplied by the brothel and backed with a promise of compensation if you do catch something - or the free market would mean places with high stv levels would lose business.
3. "Women become prostitutes because they are either desperate for money or somehow feel trapped in that kind of lifestyle because of drugs, abuse as a child, violence, etc." - True in many, even most cases, but what if they enjoy it and are paid well, as a legal taxed business would have to increase their fees?
4. "By legalizing and regulating it, a government would essentially make it more socially acceptable." - True, but it's questionable how much of a bad thing that is.
5. "Not to mention that if you have to pay for sex you are a complete loser." - Studies have actually shown that people who use prostitutes aren't socially-awkward losers, but normal people.

Taking off my heartless libertarian cap for a second, yes, you're right, the idea of it does sound grubby and disgusting, but like drugs and abortion, legalisation would be the lesser of two evils - the lives of the women in prostitution are far worse in the illegal underground than they would be if it was legalised. People are always going to use prostitutes, abortion doctors etc, so at least by legalising it you can ensure safety and health for the people involved, and that's really all the argument I need.
