Quite a good talk worth watching.

Quote:
A Swiftian lecture in which Harvey introduces the talk by suggesting that Dione apologists of received wisdom are skirting the glaring fact of; The Internal Contradictions of Capital Accumulation by framing it as failure to identify systemic risk. Harvey outlines some of these apologetic genres to great rhetorical and humorous effect. I recommend this particularly to people who base their expertise on the grounds of faithful (uncritical) reading of The Economist .
This comment is so bunk. I hate when people write like this. Intellectually cryptic/elitist for its own sake. Bleh! Waiting for the Harvey to load and buffer and what not.

Me too. I don't come across this elitist style in History as much as you would in Philosophy, I would imagine, but it is still too frequent an occurrence.
That wasn't the worst example but yeah I come across it way too much. Seeing it in history would make it worse because in philosophy you almost expect it.

Are you guys complaining about comments on a youtube video? Has the last decade taught you nothing?

Seriously who cares. The talk itself is quite an interesting one, if you are into Political Economy.

The audio sucks on my headphones made for rocking. Plus Harvey rarely seems to say stuff I don't know already.

He made the front page of CNN, don't know what more you need to do to make news.

Bah, in my view you're better off reading Harvey than Zizek, but each to their own.

I'm going to really have to watch that whole video because after reading a single essay of Harvey's he seems to recite the whole basic thing. Crises cancelled by surplus absorption then toss in accumulation by dispossession.

Ironic that the best thing Nick Clegg has done in power has been a gaffe. But... good for you, you idiot!

In other news...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/ju ... ey-sherrod

What kind of turd would edit together a tape misrepresenting someone's views so ridiculously, and then just sit back as she gets fired for it?

Who was it that said a gaffe is telling the truth? I thought Cleggerino did very well in PMQT, especially compared to the Demon Headmaster who looked like he was having a stroke at times. All this media fuss is crap considering Cameron's worse fuckup.

Still, best thing he's done? Are you counting what's been promised and not yet delivered on, because even if not, ending child migrant detention and closing the family wing of that Yarlswood place is much better than saying something everyone knows anyways. I do wish he'd said 'immoral' rather than 'illegal' because then they can't wiggle around and it's more obviously his opinion.

And that doesn't reflect well on the White Horse at all, that thing. Facepalms for that.

Well what he's promised to do and not yet delivered is irrelevant as yet.

Yes yes yes he's done one other good thing.

Pfft! Many many good things.

In other news, apparently the Milibands aren't getting on very well any more.

Dear Mr. Lincoln

We Colored People have taken a vote and decided that we don't cotton to that whole emancipation thing. Freedom means having to work for real, think for ourselves, and take consequences along with the rewards. That is just far too much to ask of us Colored People and we demand that it stop!

In fact we held a big meeting and took a vote in Kansas City this week. We voted to condemn a political revival of that old abolitionist (?) spirit called the 'tea party movement'.

The tea party position to "end the bailouts" for example is just silly. Bailouts are just big money welfare and isn't that what we want all Coloreds to strive for? What kind of racist would want to end big money welfare? What they need to do is start handing the bail outs directly to us coloreds! Of course, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is the only responsible party that should be granted the right to disperse the funds.

And the ridiculous idea of "reduce[ing] the size and intrusiveness of government." What kind of massa would ever not want to control my life? As Coloreds we must have somebody care for us otherwise we would be on our own, have to think for ourselves and make decisions!

The racist tea parties also demand that the government "stop the out of control spending." Again, they directly target Colored People. That means we Colored People would have to compete for jobs like everybody else and that is just not right.

Perhaps the most racist point of all in the tea parties is their demand that government "stop raising our taxes." That is outrageous! How will we Colored People ever get a wide screen TV in every room if non-coloreds get to keep what they earn? Totally racist! The tea party expects coloreds to be productive members of society?

Mr. Lincoln, you were the greatest racist ever. We had a great gig. Three squares, room and board, all our decisions made by the massa in the house. Please repeal the 13th and 14th Amendments and let us get back to where we belong.

Sincerely

Precious Ben Jealous, Tom's Nephew National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Head Colored Person

Really fighting racism within the Tea Party, no? Can someone explain to me how this isn't racist?
Defend it, V!

Am I supposed to give a damn one way or the other about this?

Anyway, it doesn't need me to defend it, it's defense is covered in the Bill of Rights, 1st Amendment.

Quite right. He had a right to say what he did, just as the Tea Party had a right to boot him.

Incidentally, good to see you back, V.
