 Post subject: Controversial non metal bands, that rival extremity in metal

I was thinking to myself what non metal musical acts, rival some of the shenanigans of the likes of Mayhem, Deicide, or Emperor. What are some bands that have pushed the envelope either in theatrics, sound, aesthetic, or just acts of criminality. Does their music match their acts of debauchery?

The 60's prog band Black Widow preformed Black Masses at their shows complete with a mock sacrifice and nudity.

I want to say that Coven pulled shit like that too.

Also I think lots of punk music is more abrasive than lots of metal.

Can't think of any band members killing each other and stuff, but I've heard stories of Charles Mingus pulling knives on the musicians he was playing with and slamming piano lids on the pianist's hands.

Throbbing Gristle's live shows sounded pretty nuts.

Yeah, jazz musicians used to live really fucked up lives. Charlie Parker died at 34 but the coroner estimated his age at somewhere in his 60s. That's how fucked up he was.

I think his philosophy was that if you don't live life on the edge you can't play edgy music.

Some hardcore bands have pretty brutal stage shows. Mother of Mercy, Rotting Out, and Bracewar have had some crazy shows I've been to. Those guys just like punch each other in the face and try to kill each other in the pits.

Plus my roommate has been punched square in the face twice, really hard, by Mother Of Mercy's lead singer at two different shows.

At Reading, one of the biggest rock festivals in the UK, the singer from Dillinger Escape Plan did a shit onstage and threw it into the audience, apparently as a protest that all the other bands playing were shit.

It's a lot of fun to smash people in the pit, I don't agree to crowdkilling, but when you're hyped up on adrenaline there really is no thinking about anything. Besides when the music is as aggressive as it is, it's just something that comes naturally.

No I'm absolutely all about a good metal pit. But it's different in a metal pit than a hardcore pit the majority of the time, IMO. In a metal put you push each other around, mosh around into each other, and you're not trying to kill each other like most kids in a hardcore pit throwing punches and kicks and shit everywhere.

Plus metalheads are always quick to help people up when they get knocked around, not so much at most of these hardcore shows.

I've been active in a hardcore scene because there is no metal scene where I live. I agree, though for the most part, metal shows depending on venue and band are a lot more impersonal. Hardcore shows on the other hand, involve a lot of in your face tribalistic movement, mic grabs, and even when you're not in the pit you get hit. The energy is usually a lot more than a metal show, and it's that kind of atmosphere that breeds a lot of the intensity. Usually, at metal shows they go to see the bands, at hardcore shows they go to do that plus to get involved.

Phil Spector being an abusive ass to his wife, not in the Hollywood victim sense like Tina Turner, either. He held many musicians hostage at gunpoint and forced them to re-record takes until he was satisfied. And there was the murder conviction as well.

Being an old school headbanger, I can't say I approve of the violent hardcore moshing.

I had a twit do that to me at a Metal gig a few years ago. He kept on trying to push me around.

I tried to avoid him a couple of times and then got sick of it and elbowed him as hard as I could in the stomach.

He was then dragged out by security and I went back to headbanging.

It's all about respect. If you're in the pit, respect your fellow man.

Otherwise you might meet someone who doesn't regard getting pushed around as fun and you might get hurt.
