I sometimes get a little crazy too. Especially when there's a special offer which leads me to buy a lot of back catalogue from artists I know little of but want to discover. No alcohol involved for me.
Other than that, I download, give it a listen (or 2, or 3) and decide if I want to buy the stuff.

I usually buy around 20 cds a month.

I do that except replace buy with download for free.

Since I subscribe to the Zune music service, I tend to buy based on availability and only albums that I know are from artists that are connected to bands that I enjoy. That isn't to say I won't purchase from bands I know of but play a style I do not enjoy, as there are a few Rage, Borknagar, and Enslaved albums that I may pick up, but for the most part I don't buy as much as I used too when I was in high school.
