I'm living in my new place with 3 cats, I fucking hate cats. I have talked it over with my roommates that I want to get a dog because I couldn't bring my other dog with me. Plus, my other dog is like 15 and probably wouldn't want to move anywhere. Anyway, I spent a good chunk of the day looking at dogs for sale on kijiji(website dedicated to people selling things privately) and I am stuck, kinda. I know I want to get a younger dog. Mainly so it will be young enough to not know that cats are pure evil and will get along with them, at the request of my roommates that is. The two breeds I have been looking at (mostly because they are the most readily available here) are Golden Retreivers and German Shepherds. Now, both breeds can be pretty expensive, anywhere from $800 to $1500, but I can find them for pretty cheap. If I want a dog that is already 1-2 years old, I can get it for free or dirt cheap, but I think I prefer to get a puppy so I can give it a name and train it my way. Thing is, I have never had a very young dog, therefore am not really experienced in training. Also, I am pretty busy with work 5 to 6 days a week. But, my roommate use to be a dog trainer a few years ago and has agreed to help in the training.

Now my question to you guys is, should I get a Retreive or a Shepherd? Or should I get a different breed that wont cost me over $500? Or should I just go get a dog that is already a year or so old so I don't really have to worry about house training, but risk it not getting along with the satan spawn.

what say you?

Definitely Retriever... I have heard that they are in need of a certain amount of activity though, so you'd have to walk them a lot. And get a puppy.

Yes.

Also would agree that retriever is a better choice, especially in your living situation. Almost all shepherds I've had experiences with are rather territorial.

I have been looking at the local dog pounds website and they really have nothing too offer. I guess it's a good thing that there aren't many dogs there, but the ones there are all 7+ years old and have histories of fighting or biting or not good with other pets etc.. I am going on Saturday to look at two 8 week old shepherd puppies and either before or after I'll take a look at the pound.

As for wanting a shepherd, I don't trust my neighbours. They are messed up people who look like they'd take the first chance they got and enter our house. You have a shepherd, they don't fuck with you. Even if they are not all bad(neighbours I mean) having a real guard dog will give me some peace of mind. But, I've wanted a retreiver since I was a kid and there are no shortages of retreiver breeders around here.

Thanks for your guys input so far.

Just make sure they don't come from a puppy mill.

:dio: First dog I'm getting when I have my own home is a corgi. My cousin has a black lab / corgi mix, it's basically the most awesome dog ever.

Corgis are fugly.

If the pound has a young retriever that nobody else has put an adoption request in, then yes I will get a retriever from the pound.

Ok, they are not fugly but they are also not what I'm looking for. You never hear of any corgis stopping an intruder.
