Well, I know more racist white people as well, but that just comes from my friends being predominantly white. However, while I have never been to England, I know for a fact that British blacks are VERY different from American blacks. Blacks are the most bigoted people in America, they make the KKK in their heyday look like a friendly crowd. My point was about the whole LeBron thing, is if you were to go to a 5th grade class in an impoverished neighborhood, as well as one full of privileged white kids, I bet a lot more in the rich school will say they want to be a doctor or a lawyer, or some other way of making an honest living, where the poor kids will speak of their aspirations to play in the NBA or be the next Snoop Dog. I don't blame their color or history for their problems, nor is their intelligence in question, I just think there is a vicious cycle amongst black America, that will never end unless they do something for themselves.

One of the main faults I had with the study, was it's lack of consideration of individual cases when promulgating their findings. With your statement I'm curious to know whether even knowing the names of intellectuals of similar race would make any difference given the pervasiveness of popular culture these days. While I agree with most of Cotb's statements, there will always be that one thinker that comes from a race that shakes mere cultural barriers as a whole. Perhaps I am too much of the idealist in these matters, especially when considering that race is quantified aspect of human life.

Underprivileged neighborhoods aren't exactly being scoured for talent by Harvard or Yale. However, basketball and hip hop music provide outlets to make something of themselves which doesn't rely so much on a quality education which they probably don't have access to insofar as their schools are underfunded. If anything, we should encourage them shooting for dreams as basketball players and athletes. Sports scholarships are a great way for economically and educationally poor children to make it to college and make something of themselves. Is it because they're black or because of the opportunities they're given?

I agree with you there Trapt. About the scholarships. I am a die hard Miami Hurricanes fan, and I know for a fact a lot of these kids would not be going to college if they were not gifted on the playing field. However, because of this, the academic advisors actively persuade these athletes to take the easiest majors just so they can get by before they take their crack at the NFL. Look at a college football team, especially one in close proximity to a bad neighborhood, with a lot of athletes from an underprivileged background, and see how many have nonsense majors like Liberal Arts. These students should be tried harder academically, but at least the scholarship gives them a chance at an education they would have no chance of without their skills.

What's nonsense about Liberal Arts, or the Humanities as they're known in the civilised world? Literature, philosophy, history, maths, science?

It is 'exercise science' for them. I only saw one football player in a history class during my undergrad, he was white though. He showed up for two classes but apparently passed anyhow. A joke.

Criminal Justice is where athletes go to major. So now it isn't so much the blacks per se but how athletes are passed through university, no?

My Dad always told me that Liberals Arts was the "I don't know what to do with my life" major. Criminal Justice is another popular one. If any of you watch Outside the Lines on ESPN, they once did a piece on the corruption with student athletes and scholarships and whatnot. That type of stuff happens all the time, they pass without doing anything.

Hey, they're not the ones trying to remove caps from university fees. They're not the ones getting me in danger of having to pay 12000£ a year just to study in the UK. Right now I'm massively pissed off with London, and at this very moment a friend of mine in the SNP is checking to see whether or not he can sponsor me for membership despite my invalid citizenship. The best thing for me, England and Scotland right now is Scottish independence.

I've never been in favour of removing tuition fees altogether, but I understand anger at the Lib Dems over it. Hopefully the new system will be better than the old one. And, by the way

Paying for university! What a concept. Apparently they'll change it so you have to be earning £21k a year before you start repaying, anyway, and it'd be a cool oil rig if they paid that much. And unless the SNP want to introduce communism to Scotland, they'll have to make a lot of cuts, so expect that and more. Fingers crossed that the Lib Dem vote will hold up in the north, anyhow, one of us will be laughing come next May and I have no idea which it will be. :(

Well, yeah, I live here now and it's in my best interests to get involved with the local politics. And if the best thing for me is Scottish independence, well then, I'll do what I can to achieve that. As for "word and deed"... I tried calling you a couple of weeks back, but you didn't pick up. THEN you'd have laughed.

I'm sure we've been big on Scottish independence since Jo Grimond's day, but well, the die is cast. And my phone is a piece of shit, I apologise, can't remember even getting a missed call.

Of course I agree that is what it is about. Big athletic programs hold universities hostage, and I think it is a travesty.
