Peter Tagtgren always produces interesting guitar tones. They always have a distinct sound.

No. I can almost just generally tell it's something he's produced. Which is pretty fucking cool if you ask me. He's a stand out producer.

Fucking nerd.

His production would be distinct if he didn't produce half the bands from Sweden. It's good on some albums, but on stuff like Marduk it was way too crunchy.

Marduk sucks anyway so it doesn't matter.

I can almost always tell a Peter Tagtgren guitar tone. Which is why I said his production is "distinct."

I suppose it is in a sense. His production is just too common. I liked his work on the Hypocrisy and Amon Amarth albums but felt he took the 'crunchy' too far on Enslaved and Immortal.

Morifade, for some reason, used fuzz pedals extensively. I don't hear that an awful lot on metal albums the way they did it. They wanted to destroy the dynamics of the rhythmic parts and keep a flat thin fuzzy tone and I think it sounds great. The leads are a whole lot saturated, fat, semi-clean tones with a lot of melody and dynamics, but they still have that thin fatness to them, if any of you guitarists know what i'm saying.

I say thin in the context of compression and frequency range. It does not necessarily mean "bright." a very mid-range heavy tone is thin too. AC/DC's 70's tone was thin like that.

Boris' guitar tone in just about any album, but especially Pink and Heavy Rocks. Fuzzed out Orange amps - beautiful.

Carcass' lead tone on the Swansong album - lots of sustain, smooth. Great melodeath tone, IMHO.

Fu Manchu's overall sound on the album In Search Of.

I don't know enough about guitar tone and all that to go any deeper than that.
