that's really all Wiesel is saying too but you want to label it a jew conspiracy so whatever.

It seems like he's saying Jews had it harder than anyone else, ever, always.

Haven't read Finkelstein but Wiesel is allowed to say his opinion on the experience of how awful the holocaust was as long he wasn't saying stupid shit denying empirical fact.

Wiesel is allowed to say his opinion because he blatantly disregards people who are offended by it if they stay quiet and brands them as antisemites if they do not. I bet he's hi-fiving Erdogan on a regular basis for denying the Armenian holocaust.

His character truly lives up to his surname.

What's his surname?

Honestly that's the vibe I got from reading about him as well.

JokerMachine, just a wee question... How do you feel about Victory Day still being a massive holiday in Russia?

I never really understood what this question had to do with anything. Frigid?

It seemed to me to be a possibly similar case of historical cultural focus. Is it healthy to emphasize an event of success for the Soviet Union in modern day Russia, for example. Kind of like if the US still made a big deal out of royal weddings or something.

The thing is, the US never had a royal family. It never had the kinds of upheavals in terms of political systems and government that most other countries experienced at one point or another...

Also, it wasn't a success for the Soviet Union, at least nobody now sees it like that. It was a success for the Russian people, for all Slavic people in general. Had they not succeeded, they would have been exterminated. The Soviet Union itself is an idea, a phantom. The people that it represented are very much real and no matter what "country" they're a part of, they're still a nation.

Revolution and civil war don't count?

The Revolution happened before the United States formally became a country, and, if you notice, Independence Day is widely celebrated as a national holiday.

What did the Civil War change, in terms of government and political system? There isn't much opportunity to make a holiday out of a war that was almost unanimously thought of as negative by everyone participating in it... Notice how in Russia, nobody celebrates the October revolution anymore...

Good on them, in hindsight communism was a bit of an epic fail.

Colloquially known as the October revolution because at the time, Imperial Russia was still using the Julian calendar, as opposed to the Gregorian calendar now being used.

And no, it's not a holiday anymore. In Belarus and Kyrgyzstan it is, but not in Russia.

But it is a day when the revolution is celebrated, correct?

In my three years of living here in Russia, I have never once heard of or seen someone celebrating anything on the 7th of November. It's not a national holiday, so officially - no, it's not a day when the revolution is celebrated.

Do you even read anything I write?

Yes, just questioning because I'd heard of people celebrating 7th Nov, is all.

Meh, maybe members of the Communist Party of Russia.

Also, as I previously stated - it's a national holiday in Belarus and Kyrgyzstan.
