I think I need to hear this now.

Great review, Zad. Loved your description of the awful Herion Chic, but my god, the album opens and closes with brilliant moves to 'modernize' their sound with "The Whore" and "Under your Wings". The opener is in my top 10, perhaps top 5 My Dying Bride tracks and appeals with its spacey, mind-numbingly simple yet sublime main riff. Much of the middle tracks remain a blur so I will have to re-listen...yet this is not my least favorite MDB album despite containing their by far worst track. "Like Gods of the Sun" doesn't approach the highs of the opener and closer here in that album's relatively weak Type O Negative sound.

I heard this album just before "The Light at the End of the World" was released yet the buzz had already come that the death vocals were returning; therefore, I had none of the worries that this was MDB's permanent future which older fans must have despaired of about. And yet a future with more 'Whore Cook and Mothers' would have been tremendous, and would have perhaps broken them into the mainstream without sacrificing quality.
