I play drums and have since I was 14. I have also played saxaphone, a little bit of guitar, and a little bit of piano.

What do you do musically? Does this affect your listening habits?

Guitar for 12 years pretty soon. Started with simple stuff, then got into soloing, did that for approx eight years and got damn good at it, then switched to riffing, which I'm still stuck at. Much more fun than solos. IMO

Played guitar, piano, and sung for the last two years. Not that good yet. Played bass before that but didn't practice more than an hour every week or two. Learning to sing has made me more aware of what's going on when I listen to someone sing, and I notice more details in vocal performances than I did before, so that might be why my tastes have moved towards vocal focused music over the last two years. Like I don't think if I heard something like this two years ago I would've been overcome with skin tingles and jealousy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jc3ZAs17uAg

I've been playing guitar for 4-5 years. Never took lessons or anything. It's just a hobby of mine, I don't take it too seriously.

Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keyboards, Vocals, Production, Engineering, Mixing, Mastering.

Basically I could record a fairly mediocre album all by myself, the songwriting would be good, the performance would be sloppy if not unbearable and production would be top notch.

Which means you could beat Vintersorg (who is not even alone). Adversorg ! :dio:

This is interesting:

Quote:
Many with significant ADHD can be quite socially aberrant, lack perspective-taking skills, have severe sensory integration problems.

So, I got some more meds (amps) yesterday and my singing is 1000 times better.

I always wondered why my singing totally sucked balls or was virtuosic. I thought the medicine just made it easier to focus and not get distracted, but it is apparently fixing a major physical defect. Essentially, I can not coordinate my voice/muscle memory with my hearing without the meds. Technically I can't accurately hear any frequencies that go through bone without the meds to fix the timing problem.

I knew there had to be a reason I would make some progress, then couldn't replicate it., or couldn't

I've been singing for the last 18 hours. So far I havent found a song that's too hard or anything that is any trouble at all.

Reminds me of one of my favorite stories: The guy who trains for the olympics with a Bronze discus because he didn't know the real ones were bronze plated :)

So basically I've been trying to do something physically impossible. Good thing I know how to fix it now.

I've never done any productionering but I imagine I'd be quite good at it. Can't be that hard, can it, playing around on a computer?

Goat, If I were going to write a book on recording/mixing/mastering and it had a solid electronics foundation so youcould fix a broken or worn fader, a section on theory, ear training and discusses the language of how to describe sound, it would be over 1000 pages easily.

I have a book on Amps that is very interesting until they start discussing electronics (that part is a bit above my head) and design of amps

It really gets into the perception of sound and teaches you those kind of things in a way that an audio engineering environment wouldn't, such as Bass energy not being a subjective or aesthetic choice, but a serious factor on how you perceive the pace of the music. Music that feels faster or slower than it is would be a problem. Engineers and Producers are largely unaware of this sort of thing but designers of sound equipment treat it as gospel:

I have a book on audio engineering, PM if you want a copy. It's still in print so I don't really wanna step on anyone's toes by publicly providing a means to avoid buying it. I'll happily do so privately though. Charging 4x the cost of a normal book because you can get it is wrong. I'm not playing ball with that. :D

Smart man, wearing earmuffs. Smarter than me.

I don't know what the original is like, but I listened to the PM one and it is pretty good. Needs a little bit of tightening up, other than that, good job. The audio quality is a little hard to digest though and makes the drums all sound the same.

I have some questions, if you'd indulge me:

Have you ever tried a piccolo snare?

Where is the microphone?

Do you use any room treatments?

I don't play anything anymore. But I did play:

Piano (ages 4 - 18/19 at the Royal Conservatory of Music with focus on classical piano... so about 14-15 years of it)
Keyboards/synths (about 4 years)
Alto Sax (4 years in middle school)
Guitar/bass (16 to end of high school 18/19)

Basically after I went off to university, I went out of province and didn't bring any instruments with me. After that I would only really play during the summers when I was back home. Then after that there was lots of moving and no time for playing so, now I don't play much at all and all instruments are in storage but I don't have the heart to sell them.

Edit: oh guess I didn't answer the question completely. Tbh, I'm not sure it ever really did affect my listening habits. I used to like to learn to play favourites on keyboards and guitar. I used to find it a lot of fun to play A Venomous Kiss of Profane Grace on keys, for example, and the fact that I did play keys/piano may have allowed me to develop more of an interest in bands that used keyboards or piano well in black metal.

But really aside from that I've only really listened to what I enjoy, no matter what I enjoy playing myself.

For example, I really used to love playing Beethoven. One of my favourite songs to play of any genre was Rage Over a Lost Penny by Beethoven. But despite that it was my favourite to play, I never really enjoyed listening to classical music for extended periods of time. Sure once in a while I would throw on a cd, but it was never an obsession to listen to like metal is.

Also, I really hate to listen to jazz despite that I played alto sax. I didn't mind playing it for fun, but listening to it was and is pure torture for me.

Edit again: I guess maybe one reason the instruments I played in many cases didn't really affect my listening habits is that with piano and alto sax I learned everything off reading sheet music rather than picking it up while listening to it. So I never listened to the songs themselves in order to learn them with the exception of seeing how I would compare to professionals.

With metal and keyboards/guitar it was different because I didn't learn, in those cases, off sheet music/tabs the way I did with piano or sax. So I guess in that case what I played on keys/guitar was somewhat related to what I liked to listen to...but the rest not so much.

I have a similar gap between what I like to play and what I like to listen to. I think it's because I only like playing acoustic instruments, have a low singing voice, and like to be able to make something sound like a complete song without needing other musicians... and most of the stuff I listen to involves dudes with high pitched voices, electric guitars and full bands. It probably stalled me getting into playing music because I think the reason I was never inspired to practice lots as a teenager is because I'd always try to learn to play stuff I listened to.

I like to hammer my metallic table with my hands or a spoon. It sounds like what Lars Ulrich did on St Anger and it makes me laugh.

I am starting to realize I have a weird attraction to songs in minor keys and 3/4 time. All three songs I've chosen to memorize on the piano and a pretty hefty chunk of the ones I know on guitar fit that category.
