Who are the true guitar heroes?

I mean, you have the usual shredders and all... Those guys seldom interest me...

When I want some great guitar, I go for Santana (Lotus!), Gong (Haaaa! Steve Hillage), Genesis (with Hackett), King Crimson (Fripp), Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix (obviously), Ritchie Blackmore (either with Deep Purple or Rainbow), Quicksilver Messenger Service (John Cippolina) or Jimi Page... (etc)

I had to admit I once had a weak spot for Satriani (still love The Extremist) and Yngwie (his first solo album is particulary tasty)...
Also, I'm rarely amazed by guitarists in metal music. I mean, they sure do the job nicely and are mostly all apt instrumentalists and all... But, mainly, they're all the same and I can hardly tell one from the other in every specific sub-genre.

Anyone else didn't immediately come to mind, so whatever. But those guys are all exceptional songwriters which is the measure or their ability and not their dexterity.

Guys where listening to them makes me want to be able to play like them:
1. Stefan Koglek from Colour Haze. He's simply the best.
2. Omar Rodriguez Lopez. I'm envious of his approach to playing music since it sounds very free of analysis. I like learning the theory side of things, but I also wish I could turn it off and wing it the way he seems to. My brain doesn't like doing that though.
3. John Ferrerra from Trophy Scars. He does a lot of different things well, especially on Bad Luck and Darkness, Oh Hell, where he blends it into a consistent sound/style too.
4. Mikael Akerfeldt. Love his riffs and he's got feelin' to his solos.

Fripp is cool just because he's so distinctive and I like that Jeff Beck song where it sounds like his guitar is crying.

if i ever start playing like petrucci or malmsteen or especially batio i hope someone near and dear to me cuts my hands off (loll generic anti-shredder comment)

Ben Sharp, because doing everything yourself is badass.
Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, loopy Prog Rock and lots of energy and creativity.
Devin Townsend, because the sheer volume and quality of his work is amazing.

I love comments like this, as if you are anywhere near the ballpark in being able to play like those guys, especially Batio.

And comparing them to other styles is stupid, so let's not even waste any time on that.
They are shredders, and that is what they do. And they are good at it.
