Other than the obvious Made In Japan and Live After Death what are some fantastic live albums in rock/metal?

I don't really listen to a lot of live albums, but Alive in Athens is quite good (if a tad sterile) and the live bonus tracks on the Sabbat re-issues are excellent.

Since you are a recent Negura Bunget convert I strongly suggest their recent live DVD, Focal Viu. All the instruments are brought on stage, and the production is fantastic.

I already have Live In Athens, but thanks for the recommendation.

Iced Earth - Alive In Athens
Megadeth - Rude Awakenings
Slayer - Decade of Aggression

Though most other lives albums suck!

@Emperorblackdoom: Amazon also has the audio version too. Not a big fan of DVD's although it would be cool to see how they look on stage. I'll probably buy the audio version though. The sound quality should be very good if the DVD sound quality as you say is fantastic.

What other live albums are you talking about?

Suck might be to strong a word - average at best is a better one.

All the others I've heard including stuff ala Metallica's SYmphony and Live Shit: Binge and Purge, Iron Maiden Live At Donnington, Death on the Road,A Real Live One/A Real Dead One, Pantera's Live 101, the Judas Priest one (maybe cause I don't like Judas Priest), Kataklysm's live DVD, etc etc.

I don't like them at all unless I have heard a band's entire discography a few hundreds of times or it is my introduction to a band.

I know we've had this thread before and I recall listing these as the only ones I really care about:

Vision Divine - Stage of Consciousness
Sonata Arctica - For the sake of revenge (Promo CD)
Tribuzy - Execution Live Reunion
All Rush
All Dream Theater

I have a 1984 Chicago boot from TV broadcast I like too. Mr. Cetera sounded like shit that night though. I feel better after watching this one.

To me a band had better be beyond dead on. I really don't want to hear a whole bunch of subtle timing issues and bum notes personally after getting used to the way the album sounds. These things are really subtle, and that subtlety sounds awesome when bands knock it out of the park. I'm more likely to care about a live performance if the production is drastically different like Rush's concerts are from the albums. DT to a lesser extent since Labrie sings like a pussy live. But too much would be far worse, like that weird piercing note he hit in Japan that he made a load groan sound over.

Kiss my ass, that's why I dislike Live albums for the most part

I'm not usually a big fan of DVDs either, but seeing them on stage with all their traditional instruments was a treat.

I have the DVD for Mayhem and the audio CD for In The Woods and they are both very good. Cheers. But I will check out the Krieg one.

Yes... I too want the production and the performance to be fantastic as the thread title was directly implying so. A live performance of a band will be different anyway as the band wants the audience to experience their sound differently. Not a fan of Rush nor DT as you know so I don't think I'll be getting those anytime soon. Maybe Rush will be the next band I'll try to like the vocals because the music is quite good.
