This thread pops every few months or so and my advice is always the same: take a break from metal and listen to something else (prog rock, classical, a little darkwave for me) or take a break from music and enjoy the silence. Overlistening can and will ruin your taste in something, potentially forever.

I agree with the guys telling you take a break from metal, it's not really a problem for me as i listen to all kinds of music, from hiphop to dubstep to Gospel to Pop to you name it. So i allways have something to fit whatever mood i'm in. Expanding one's musical horizons is allways a good thing imho.

I have the opposite problem. I'm not bored with metal or anything like that, I just can't find enough new music. I would consider 2011 a pretty weak year overall but I still heard a ton of new albums that I loved, I just wish there was more of it.

This. It's been 15 years now, and it has always worked. Especially silence.

I hear the radio all day at work, I don't like it.

I've pretty much found my niche in music I like and it's black metal for the most part.

I personally never get tired of metal. And it's not bacause the really infinite amount of stuff to hear. That's the beauty of it, it's not about some catchy rhythm or few lines that get repeated for ~3 minutes. Most of the songs are 5, 7, 10 minutes and above in length. When I listen to a song, it's like a journey in which I always find something new, even after 100 listens.

Yeah, but even so, metal has far better songwriting even if you do want to listen to commercial pop music. Plus it has integrity. I don't care about non-rock genres and metal has blended Rock with everything anyway. Why bother with songwriting that is much less developed and is missing crucial elements that have to be present?

Husker, I agree with the advice that Trapt has offered you. I've been listening to hard rock and metal since 1980 and I can't begin to count how many times I have hit a musical wall like you have. This has happened with more frequency over the last 10 years. In fact, I spent the better part of this year away from metal listening to new age electronic soundscape stuff because metal had just become absolutely boring to me.

It does take a ton of digging and research to find music that I truly enjoy now. I think this is because there is just so much music available that it's extremely difficult to sift through all of it to find what I really like. Plus, there isn't the corporate machine along with radio/mtv to market new music the way they had previously to narrow your choices. It's scattered all over the damned interwebs and I just don't have the time to commit to finding the good stuff. I've taken a large part of my time off over the last 10 days just researching new music. It's been nice getting back to metal and hopping back on this forum.

I find that the breaks from particular styles of music is good because I get to discover new genres without feeling like I sold out in some way. Earlier this year I was walking through a renaissance festival and I met two incredibly talented celtic harp players. I was so impressed that I bought everything that each was selling. That took me down another musical path that I never thought that I would enjoy. So who knows? Just try to enjoy the ride.

One interesting quirk I have noticed about myself is that I don't like listening to older stuff at all. I was once a huge fan of Van Halen but now I want nothing to do with them. I just feel that they have a place in my musical history and they can stay there. Kind of like my ex-wife...we had fun for awhile but that's over now. I know it sounds strange but one can only listen to 'Jump' so many times.

Hang in there and good luck finding music that you enjoy.

I agree....that is the best advice.

I too have hit walls like yourself and wondered what song or band is going to thrill me like it used to, but its few and far between. I guess when you have to listen to albums for reviewing purposes like myself and other people in here, it can get quite tedious after a while.

Maintain your faith in metal, cos there's always something just over the horizon that will blow you away. Most of us have been in your shoes...your 2nd wind is right around the corner.

Listen to the old and relieve your youth.

Occassionally pick up something new.

Whinge about how much better metal was back in the old days.

I'm constantly exploring the metal scene and checking out obscure releases I've not yet heard. Even if I feel like I've hit a wall, I know there's always going to be hidden gems waiting to be unearthed and of course, I can always branch out into other styles of music.

Not to mention, I've got about a thousand CDs in my collection and I know for a fact that there's many that are in need of some attention, or even just a simple revisit.

I've only got 300+ but I find it the same as yourself. Go through the collection and pick out something I haven't listened to for ages.
