Hi guys, I have something for you.

I've rather quickly made an audio quiz, including 20 samples of metal riffs, 5 seconds each. I'm submitting this to you guys, now it's up to you to try and find the 20 bands and tracks titles! Oh and don't even try to Shazam them, I made sure they're all too short for this. The same goes for Track ID, Sound Hound, etc. You filthy cheats.

I don't know if you find those quizes fun, I know I do. If you do, I'd be glad to make this on a regular basis, we could even organize a little contest between you guys, with a prize why not :D Say, the album of you choosing, or something like that. Anyway, that's only if enough of you are interested in playing this. Let me know.

But for now... just listen to the video.

I'm waiting for your guesses. Right now there's nothing to win, so just post away and let's see how things go.

PS: lurkers, feel free to subscribe and play!

EDIT: link to the quiz : http://www.sporcle.com/games/Bruce_B/me ... om-quizz-1

You know, Sporcle is a perfect site to make this kind of quiz. If you could create it there it would be awesome.

Edit: Something like this is what you could do and you already have the YouTube clip so it's really just putting in the answers.

Oh ok cool, checking that out.

Edit: edited OP with the link to the quiz.
OK, this could work. If we decide to organize some kind of MR contest, people indeed just have to answer in this tool (so they know which answer they have right or wrong, nifty), and copy/paste me the results in a PM.

Really, if you guys have fun with those, I have enough material to create dozens of them. I can do more specific or theme quizes (Power Metal only, Death metal only etc., riffs, screams, shrieks, growls, drums, guitar solos... you name it.) I could implement a points system: you found 13 correct answers in quiz #1, you got 13 points, and so on with quiz #2, #3, etc. After say 10 quizes we have a winner, and a prize to win.)

Anyway, just a few ideas. I liked DutchWhiteBear's quiz with the old photographs, I just thought we could maybe have a regular something like this in our very forum.

Nice. Unfortunately I suck and am not familiar enough with a lot of the bands. But what I DO know is that your answer for #10 is wrong. You have the right album but it's the last track on the album from which that riff is from.

Sorry dude, I wanted to put my favorite track (#4), then didn't find a sufficiently killer, vocalless riff in that one. I forgot to edit my list after the change.

Anyway, edited, and thanks for the find, sorry for the blunder.

edit: Maybe I should put hints. My buddy whom I KNOW owns at least 18 albums out of the 20 of that list only found 9. Graphical hints rather than text ones maybe...

Err... do you know how I can prevent missed answers to show at the end of the quiz, by any chance?

I've seen quizzes that don't show the answers at the end but I'm not exactly sure how it's done.

I listened and probably would get two or three of the tracks right, 7 or 8 of the bands right. I know you listen to some different stuff than me Bruce, but I have a lot of trouble with 5 second clips. Hints or longer clips would probably make the tests a lot less embarrassing for us.

And of course, track #10 is the riff that I've played hundreds of times over in my head. I'm surprised you find track #4 from that album to be better, but to each his own!

Cool concept, Bruce :dio:

:)

Yeah, it's too hard. I wanted short clips because of 2012 technology (the Shazam software itself could ID 15 tracks out of the 20 at the very least, with longer clips... and there are others). And I wanted a no-vocals thing because I thought it was too easy with them, and a piece of cake with lyrics (google). But yeah, the next one will need to be easier one way or another. Add in a couple of words, or something.

Regarding the album we're talking about, I didn't say track 4 was better, it's just the one I like the most (but not by far). :)

Ok, got rid of songs names in the quiz, that should make things a bit easier with this one.

Fun idea :)

I got 8 and 13, what prize do I win? Seriously though, I suck. A bunch sounded familiar but those were the only two I knew right off the top of my head.

edit: hey I figured out another one, 12. Surprised I didn't get it right away. What software did you use to edit this together?

No, none of you suck. It's way too hard. I have two upcoming ones, one focussed on Heavy/Power/Prog, the other on Death/Black/Thrash/Extreme. The samples will last 15-20 seconds, and won't be a "riff only" thing (well, a few are when necessary). I don't know about the number of samples included in the test though. I don't want to bore you guys, I want it to be fun. I may add pics and/or comments as well to the clips, if it's fun.

And to think that initially I wanted to make 2-4 seconds samples... Anyway, this test #0 obviously sucks but the feedback is appreciated, thanks :)

Nothing fancy or spectacular, really. Audacity to extract samples from mp3, iMovie (the Mac equivalent of Windows Movie Maker) to put everything together. It took me a couple of hours only because I had to learn how to use them. If you know what you're doing, it's a lot quicker.

We did this with Rush and there was about 1/10th to less than a quarter second for each one. I think one of the clips was the decay from the chimes from Xanadu with a smear of taurus pedals way down in the mix. I didn't miss a single one. I lost because I was moving during the finals and couldn't guess the last couple weeks.

#2 sounds like Nevermore's Seed Awakening

Oh damn, forgot to post the list. Here it is, eventually:

1. Wolf Genocide
2. Annihilator Loving the sinner
3. Peste Noire Le Mort Joyeux
4. Astral Doors Cloudbreaker
5. Stormwarrior Metal Legacy
6. Vader Choices
7. Enforcer Live for the Night
8. Accept Beat The Bastards
9. Firewind Skg
10. Emperor Cosmic Keys to my Creations and Times
11. Arghoslent Incorrigible Bigotry
12. Savage Circus Legend of Leto II
13. Arch Enemy Enemy Within
14. Cradle of Filth The Forest Whispers my Name
15. Ancient Rites Invictus
16. Bolt Thrower Spear Head
17. Seventh Avenue Priest and Servants
18. Absu Pillars of Mercy
19. Grave Digger Liar
20. Hibria Stare at Yourself

I'm going to make two more (20 seconds excerpts, and fewer maybe, like 12) for the two main subforums (HM/PM/Prog and TM/BM/DM), some time. There will be vocals (unless it's too easy).

And naked chicks. So stay tuned.

Little time these days, but soon yes. The track lists are ready. Do you guys have a preference between a Heavy/True/Prog/Hard Rock quiz, and a Thrash/Death/Black quiz ?

No preference....Heavy/True/Prog would probably be easier though.

Wow. I don't even think I can keep up. I've only heard of handful of the bands. I swore that Annihlator song was Nevermore. It's not your fault but youtube has decided against audio having any quality whatsoever.
