Well, I bit the bullet and bought a used copy of Conquer from Amazon.com today. I'll post my thoughts when it comes in the mail at the end of the week.

That's because Metal Archives sucks.

Not having a go, but what would you recommend for a metal collection and information website that is better than Metal-Archives?

Then if you like Conquer, you'll love Dark Ages. All you have to do is check out Frontlines and Arise Again on youtube to understand how awesome that album is.

And then be disappointed at how the rest of the album lets you down. :P

That's because dummies insist they were once a nu-metal band, when they never were.

They WERE kind of a nu-metal band on the first two records (albeit one of the more respectable ones). However, starting with 3, they gradually moved away from the genre. And now they're basically a modern thrash metal band, mixing the thrash of Arise with the groove of Chaos AD, with just a hint of the tribal overtones on Roots.

That is more groove than Nu. I mean, I can hear that it was an influence, but it sounds like a more accomplished Chaos AD to me, with greater tribal experimentation - more like a South American Machine Head than Korn or Limp Bizkit.

I don't know. I could imagine the song "Dusted" with Fred Durst on the mic. It's IMO not so different. Especially the rap vocals. It could be called Proto-Nu Metal, whereas I think Korn were there before Roots came out. ;)

Babylon, I and I, Corrosion Creeps, Carved Inside? Get out of my house. I need to listen to Omen still.

Korn released their debut album about a year and a half before Roots. But the term "nu-metal" wasn't really devised until probably around the time Life Is Peachy was released. When Korn's s/t album was released, it was basically perceived as a rap/hardcore/punk hybrid. It didn't even really become popular until around early-1996.

This album is coming off as kinda bland. Some awesome tracks but much of it seems recycled or leftovers from the last two albums. I personally see Dark Ages as the peak with Conquer being a little more recycled but still solid and then this just kinda screaming how Max needs some new influences on his writing. Some good tracks though and not an all-around bad album, still much better than the early stuff. Maybe Soulfly just isn't my exact cup of tea. I dig some of it but a lot of it blurs in together to me.

And Rise of the Fallen is still sick.

That's your own damn fault for wasting your time on a Michael Bay flick.

After listening to Conquer a few days ago and being surprised at just how well it has aged, this album is just bad. It's not awful but it is just not worth listening to. The songs are all just weak. I really want to hear Enslaved, though. Somebody get on that review.

Checking out Dark Ages as well, again. Maybe I'll change my mind and concede to Zad that Conquer is better. I deleted three of the tracks off my computer (for some reason I have no idea) so maybe that trimming will skew my conclusion.

Metal Archives are stupid cunts. They have a lot of competely non metal shit like Mortis and tons of electronica or Def Lepard who were never metal and had like half a metal song on their first album.

Soulfly is more metal than a lot of the crap on Metal Archives.

A few years ago they didn't accept a number of Grind bands cause they were too "punk." Having owned the CD's I could hear that they were mainly Napalm Death clones.

As I stated, Metal Archives are stupid cunts. May cancer consume their balls.
