I'm having the same problem. I have met this girl which I might add is very childish at times, but likes Emperor and Opeth, however, unfortunately, she does not have the looks and she does not have the body, either. After meeting someone after a long time that I somewhat like, she turns out to be this way. I mean there has to be a basic attraction and it just doesn't exist! Too fuckin' bad, I suppose!

Physical attraction is, sadly, necessary. The childishness would be off-putting too, though.

Yeah... The other chick I was talking about as well is just in a different stage in her life so there really is no chance of going out with her. This is the girl that is moving to Australia because she has "met" someone there. In any case, she would've been a trophy girlfriend and I hate having one of those in my life, anyway.

You've had many trophy girlfriends? I can understand why, being a wizard and all.

Speaking of women and music, I met this girl last night who overheard my table's philosophy discussion going on and then ended up asking me about the music I'm interested in. Real awkward moment, you know? Trying to impress a lady and about to drop the fact that I listen to metal (which most women perceive, well, you fuckers know how perceptions of metal are) so I say "metal and hardcore punk mainly". Then she asks me what bands and I don't know I drop standard punk bands like Bad Brains and Black Flag and then she says she listens to math metal and we end up talking about The Locust, Dillinger and Converge and it was awesome till she mentioned how her boyfriend has a septum piercing like my own. Bitch...

thread jacked.

Hah, good stuff.

If she were into black metal you would have already hit a homerun.

Girls do like to flir- I mean, chat about stuff with friendly males who aren't boyfriends, y'know. Don't take it personally...

Hm, think I'll leave it a while before introducing mine to The Locust or Converge.

I introduced the ladyfriend to Rhapsody the other day since she loves fantasy novels. I think she was more in awe of Christopher Lee narrating than anything else.

I have better relationships with girls that aren't into Metal. Girls into Pop or Electronica are the way to go for me. I don't need girls for music talk, that's your job, guys

Personal Top five of the worst reactions to "I listen to metal, mostly" I've had the past 15 years:

5. "Oh."

(As in "Deal breaker, dude.")

4. "Oh yeah this is so cool, I love Linkin Park, have you heard of them?"

(wat)

3. *Laughter* "... Oh wait... Oh I'm sorry you were serious."

(Kinda, yeah.)

2. "OK, are you violent?"

(She already seemed to have a hard time dealing with the fact I also liked playing video games. Cliché, you say? Naaaah.)

1. "OH GOD, NO, GOD, YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!!!!"

What, did I rape your cat by inadvertance or something?
(to be honest, she had a very, very bad relationship with a fierce metalhead, and I actually could understand her reaction afterwards)

I only went out with one of the five women, will you find which one?

I feel like if I couldn't talk about music with a girl we'd just sit there and stare at each other and it'd be all sorts of awkward.

Guessing #3, Bruce.

And as long as a woman has a semi-developed taste in music/film/literature/etc, she should be able to appreciate anyone else with a similar worldview.

There is a culture some of us seek out, and there is a culture some of us consume because we are told to do so.

You guessed right, bingo. And I agree completely.

Right. And that is the main reason I have a difficult time meeting girls. They are obligated to like "this" and "that" and cannot simply think for themselves, let alone think outside the box, so to speak. Have we gotten so far away from actual and simple common sense? What does really appeal to me? What is the me and the "I" inside (and let us not get even close to the ever deepening philosophical debate over this) or is this a question of true identity within a particular person? Has mainstream media taken over everything? People are simply either too terrified to look inwardly into themselves or are just superficially satisfied with what is been spoon fed to them each and everyday and for the rest of life, quite frankly.

I don't know. I've steeped myself in metal culture, and have come through the other end, and been left none the wiser. Those of you who know me on FB or wherever will know I'm as outwardly metal as Rick Santorum, and my listening habits these days range from Lady Gaga to Lugubrum. I don't approach women (*cough* didn't approach women) with musical compatibility first and foremost on my mind, and I think not doing the same is a bit optimistic to say the least, unless you're very lucky.

*cue hundreds of stories of happy metal couples*

But seriously, finding out that the girl I like enjoys even some of the music I've mentioned in this thread is a bonus, really, and more than a lot of people have.
