I still buy albums, but I was always worried that you all wouldn't approve of my recent purchase of the entire Spice Girls discography (a bargain considering the store gave me a $50.00 gift card to take them off their shelves)..... :P

Jokes aside, I suppose I can start posting there, though from the comments here it sounds like a lonely thread to post in.

Dude! Post :dio:

I don't download but I just don't buy that often....maybe like one or two albums a month. I think I've mentioned before that I have weird listening habits. :P

+1

I just bought 5 more yesterday, which I'll be posting soon in the recent purchases thread, and I've got 3 more coming in the mail.

Eh, even if I had money, I probably wouldn't buy albums. Personally, I'm more invested in my book collection and can't really ever see a collection of CDs or vinyl becoming a draw for me. I would much rather attend shows and buy merch from bands in order to fiscally support them. In terms of listening, I don't have a need for tons of albums; I prefer digital files. Ethically, I don't see buying a physical CD as contributing to the artist as much as it should and hence have no desire to prop up a rightfully dying system. Politically, SOPA and all those proposals overstep their bounds. Instead, the music industry needs to act and provide reasonable access to music. I have no problem paying for Bandcamp downloads. They are low maintenance websites with minimal dues required to share music. More labels should get on it following Relapse's lead. The only two albums that I've bought this year are Author & Punisher's Drone Machines and Skagos' Anarchic; both were on bandcamp for reasonable prices.

Trapt, I love book collections too. Mine is ever-expanding; You should post a picture of your library. I do remember seeing it in the background of one of your photos, however. Take a new picture of your precious library and reveal!

For me, I just cannot place the same value on an MP3/media format as I do the physical album. I have a personal connection with CD's (and somewhat with vinyl) that probably stems from growing up around them in a musically oriented household. More recently I have begun collecting autographed albums, which will unfortunately die off when CD's take the final plunge.

I think I am actually quite the opposite of Trapt in that I used to have a large book collection, but just don't feel the need for it like I did before. I would easily give up my books to make space (since I tend not to reread them anyways).

As to supporting the artists, Trapt is right that buying records does not really accomplish that. Short of purchasing the records directly from the artist via Paypal (and even then they have already purchased the record from the company, if I understand it correctly), there is little to no proffit in album sales. It is all done via merchandising and touring. Funny thing, Mel Brooks called this out in Spaceballs "Merchandising, where the real money is made!"

My mom's huge collection of clothes inspires me not to collect things and only to keep stuff I use regularly. Although I'm not very good at getting rid of the music I have, it's a reason not to buy any more CDs or LPs when I'm listening to my iPod 99% of the time.

re: supporting the artists. I don't actually care that much where the profits are going, but I'm acting more on the assumption that buying albums will encourage labels/musicians to keep making albums. And I want to discourage them from making ugly band shirts, so I don't buy those. (I buy cool band shirts but those are rare.)

You most probably have more Jazz albums than I do! How many of them do you have? And what would be the main concentration of you collection if any?

Not really, listened to most of my jazz online rather than buy - have A Love Supreme somewhere, some Miles Davis... that's it I think! Most of my CDs are metal, I think.

How many albums do you approximately possess?

I have no idea tbh, after several moves and selling some of them. Five or six decent-sized box-fulls?

I see. That's around 700 or so, I presume. Watching Youtube videos makes my collection so insignificant compared to tens and thousands of vinyls and CDs people own. Quality over quantity, I guess.
