Good score. I realize that there is a love/hate relationship with Mesh around here but dang they make some infectious style of music IMHO :dio:

Well reviewed. Really liked your comparison of Mithras' and Meshuggah's use of melody.

As of now, I'd say the peaks of this album don't match Bleed or Combustion, but the album is more listenable as a full album experience than anything they've released since Chaosphere (not counting Catch 33, which was no collection of songs). Remarkable how oddly talented this band is: I rarely can stand them for a full album length listen, much less endure the largely monotonous torture that is their entire discography at once. Yet in 3-4 track chunks I can't think of anyone more listenable.

Have to agree while I admire how talented they are I do struggle to listen to a whole ablum in one go. I tend to play a few tracks at a time then listen to something else.

I gave a disgruntled review when I first heard this, but then it grew on me. They are what they are and they are very good at it. It's so powerfull on I am Colosuss when he's like " I am life and death" " You enpower me". Do not look down and The demon's name is whatever it's called are super catchy. I can honestly say I like the whole album, but I agree listening to any whole Meshuggah album at once is difficult. It really pounds when you crank it up I'll say that. It is very very heavy.

Now I know why it's the only Meshuggah I can really enjoy.
Thanks.

It's an awesome album.

I gave Koloss a listening to and I didn't mind it so much today. Didn't make it past six tracks but enjoyed it till I didn't.

Like a lot of metal, Meshuggah isn't *really* about songs in the same way that other bands are. It's an experience, a step into some weird mechanical robot world... almost worth approaching it like you would black metal rather than you would anything else!

Agreed re obZen being beTTer, but this is still excellent. One of my favourite bands, ever since when I was getting into metal and the Rational Gaze vid opened me up to just what wacky things men with long hair could do with guitars - heaviness that bent my mind, as opposed to battering it.

Meshuggah, and no other band, will always represent that well-termed 'mechanical robot world'. Best to check it out for 20 minutes at a time, before the robots grow angry.

That's where Catch 33 does succeed for me.

Very good assessment of the band in general.

A lot of tech DM bands ala Psycroptic are the same though it's usually in 1-2 track chunks.

I need songs.

I even like DM bands that write songs ala Bolt Thrower or Gorefest or Atheist.

Tis probably why I don't like Black Metal unless it's Gothed up Symphonic stuff that's influenced by BM (e.g. Dimmu Borgir).

There are some songs on early Meshuggah but by nothing they replaced it with monotonous droning.

Which is fair enough, of course, although I'll just repeat that my personal entry into the band was with Rational Gaze, as mentioned above, which is a Nothing tune and one of their catchier moments. They're certainly not a band that were content to repeat Future Breed Machine for the rest of their careers, as some might have done. Not for everyone, of course.

God this album bored mo to death. I keep waiting and waiting but nothing interesting ever happens. I did like Catch 33 and I so I guess I need to check this out when I feel more patient.
