In Beijing Australia came sixth, in Athens fourth!

We're only 20 million people. Pretty good.

This is the first time Britain has beaten us in a long, long time. (As a cricket fan, losing to England kind of pisses me off).

Only?! Wow, I thought you guys were at least 100 million. Impressive indeed.

As a Frenchman, losing to England makes me want to eat my intestines (but cooked in red wine, with a soupçon of sauce béarnaise, and a slice of Saint-Nectaire for dessert.)

I prefer faba beans and a nice chianti.

But yeah, we're like 22 million people, at the last census, I think.

And it's done. Add in the cycling chick on the afternoon, and that's 4 gold for you Aussies. Damn, your women are fast.

- The Algerian 1500m winner (Makhloufi) ran the last 250m of his final at the pace of a 4x400m runner. Besides, he hadn't done anything so far this year, he basically comes from nowhere. And finally, he's somehow much more muscular than his competitors. CHEATING FUCK. I hope he gets caught and banned for life.

- There's a lot of noise here regarding tonight's boxing matchs. Both French dudes got eliminated by the refs, whereas they obviously should have won (especially Vastine against the Ukrainian guy). I frankly don't give a fuck, but what happened tonight SCREAMS for French bashing from Brit refs. Kinda ugly if you ask me. Both dudes were gold medal potential.

- Other than that, krieg games so far, Brits. I'm having a blast :dio:

edit: on second thought, maybe the refs were just bought. But something unfair happened, that's crystal-clear.

Yeah, all the news in Australia this morning is about how our men have let us down while the women have picked up the slack. Everyone's trying to analyse why our men have underperformed.

Anyway, we have one more gold medal guaranteed in the sailing (they have put themselves in an unbeatable position going into the last race) so that will be 5. Then I expect our men's hockey team to win as well, plus a couple of other small chances. I still reckon 7 golds for the final tally.

I didn't see either of those events, but if they played out the way you say, that really pisses me off.

I'm a huge sports fan, (watching, not playing....i'm lazy) not just during the olympics, and for some reason I am drawn to the idea of people bringing the best out of themselves and competing fairly. Especially since it can bring the world together in an event like this.

Drug cheats and corrupt officials are so damaging, there's no underestimating it. We've gotten to a point where people can't perform at an elite level without being questioned, and it has tarnished sport forever. Such a shame.

Judging by some of the post match interviews with the swimmers, it seems it's a case of over confidence.

Seems like a France vs Spain day...
Today, all quarters:
Women's Elliot, Sailing. (Spain winning 2-0)
Men's Handball
Men's Basketball.

And it seems that every spanish medal is wet... swimming, sailing, triathlon, canoes, waterpolo....

do you think Spain threw the b-ball match vs Brazil to avoid the USA?

Portugal claimed its first medal this morning, Fernando Pimenta and Emanuel Silva got the silver in men's K2 canoe 100 metre sprint! Portugal now has more medals, over all our olympic participations, than that asshole Michael Phelps! suck it, Phelps!

They were leading after 3 periods, then they magically lost... To me it's obvious, but it's unavoidable with these stupid group stages. So, I'm not mad at them, at all.

Well, Spain did the same against Rusia (lead after 3 periods, magically lost). I think they really didn't play to lose, I think they didn't need to win, and played like that game was a friendly match.

a friend posted this on facebook: Fernanda Ribeiro's 10.000m gold medal run at the 1996 Games: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... 6-Y#t=190s

the url is set to start at the beginning of the final lap. Ribeiro seemed "doomed" to second place, but out of nowhere she managed to sprint past the world record holder who was in first, setting a new Olympic record on the way. amazing stuff.

from wikipedia:
Quote:
I had promised to fight until my very limits, I only missed finishing on my knees. From the 3rd kilometer I started feeling pain on the Achilles' tendon, managed to withstand, suffered, but I, for the dream of becoming Olympic champion, was ready to run until... death knocked me over! I just got a bit scared when I saw Wang, the turtle-blood Chinese, isolating 400m to the finish line. But that instant I wasn't defeated yet... it was when I remembered my promise to go to Fatima on foot.

Olympic as fuck.

seems like a rather poor Portuguese translation, but the message is clear. Fátima is a sanctuary town (think Lourdes but Portuguese), many people take up the pilgrimage on foot for some promise or whatever.

Fernanda Ribeiro, I remember her! I was 14 in 1996, and saw her win live in the middle of the night. Atlanta 1996 was insane, Michael Johnson raping world records (I yelled when he finished his 200m in 19"32), Marie-José Perec winning double gold (200m and 400m), Jean Galfione winning the pole vault contest...

Ha, to be in 1996 again..

I was 10 years old and the only cd I had was Michael Jackson "Bad"..... Let's just stay in 2012.

Anyway, Australia up to 5 golds and counting.

One more and we're back inside the top 10.

Tasmania.

Used to be a fan but got bored with it several years ago. Was a Hawks man (even before they started playing in Tas).

Ah, cool.

I was just in Hobart last month. Gorgeous place. Reckon I might live there for a while sometime in the future.

Anyway, shame you're not into it anymore, I'm a bit obsessive over it (Blues fan), its always nice to have people to chat to about it. Hawks are looking good this year anyway.
