Sometimes a musician or artist will emerge with such force in either his own efforts or a monumental album that it takes everyone off guard. Who in recent memory left a sudden and violently creative album or an album that impacted you- only to disappear from the face of the earth or re-emerge in a different identity altogether?

Children of Bodom. I thought "Are You Dead Yet?" was just career suicide. I got drunker than hell one night and really enjoyed the album but I can't think of any reason why they would make that kind of record when everything up to that point had been a huge success. They started off like Yngwie and became like Slayer gradually and that sucks: :/

Well, it's been said a thousand times before but worth saying again. Lost Horizon.

Wintersun. trololol

Little-know but much-praised around here (by me) band called Corpsing, who released two brilliant albums then disbanded. Really enjoyed their brand of experimental death metal.

Ditto ditto black metal example called Contra Ignem Fatuum.

Morifade released two incredible albums before their label was bought out and the money dried up to develop them.

Lykathea Aflame. They released one epic, so good it's out of this world monster of a record and then vanished. Apparently they've been working on new material under the name Lykathé but there hasn't been any news about that whatsoever.

I would say Car Bomb, but they have new material coming out in a month or so.

Yep. Such a good call that I forgot about that band completely, again.

Hell yes they were. Follow the Reaper was their best IMO. Not much to note after that.

I'd say up through Hatecrew Deathroll they were enjoyable every blue moon or so.

I'd say their first four albums are still very enjoyable. I used to like Are You Dead Yet? a few years ago but it got old quickly. Everything after that one isn't even worth mentioning.

Ditto on Lost Horizon.

Also Floor Jensen's band Revamp. Haven't heard much from her camp in a while.

The 4 first Bodom albums are good/great, but as with every hyper-melodic album, you quickly get tired of them. Songs including 45 melodies each are great for a couple of listens, then you get wankery-nauseated for a year or two.

OP: Virgin Steele is a band that I dearly miss, although they're still out there. Although VS doesn't really fit with your description. Neither does Bodom, that said.
