Great album; Brann Dailor is one of the most fresh and talented drummers out there by the way.

Mastodon are awesome. I'm not entirely convinced about some of the vocals on this, but the drums are insane and I love the variation in the riffs. Really strong writing on both Mastodon full-lengths. Very originally as well.

Yeah, Mastodon most definitley slay; I still have a hard time choosing which album I like more.

I must make a special mention that the riff in I Am Ahab that plays around 1:06 is not from this world !!!

Yes, that riff is fucking awesome. The drums keep perfect pace with the rhythm of that riff too which makes it sound even better. If that riff doesn't make your head spin, I don't know what will.

the vocals don't work for me and the band sometimes plods along instead of thrashing it up and stuff.

or maybe i just haven't given it enough time.

Not my thing. Them and Dillinger Escape Plan are whored out so much by Relapse its not even funny. After all the hype that was thrown into this band I was expecting alot more than what was delivered.

DEP isn't good at all and the only thing they share is being on the same label. Since when do you like something that isn't power metal anyway? :)

Drummer's very talented, the guitar riffs are very good, pretty inventive. But the singer sucks terribly, I've never quite liked hardcore vocals, no talent required. 'Nuff said.

haha. yea, power metal sucks. i have friends who only listen to power metal... most closed-minded people i know. they hate everything but music with a constant galloping pace and foofoo-faggy keyboards.

god, fuck power metal. and go mastodon!

That's pretty disrespectful and I wholly disagree. Power metal is very good and the most talented musicians are the power/prog guys. Plus it actually requires some talent to sing power metal vocals. On contrast, hardcore vocals require no talent, just a bit of training and endurance. I'm pretty open to all kinds of metal, but I still think power/prog is the best. And I'll say it again, musically, Mastodon is a very good band, but the singer really ruins the experience for me. If they get an actual singer, they could sound a lot better.

That's the complaint of everybody who just doesn't like harsh vocals. If they had a 'real' singer, they wouldn't have the same power and atmosphere. Personally, I like all types of vocals including hardcore (if they're good), and in this case I think the vocals fit the music.

I would like to add that saying that the prog/power musicians are the best is stupid; as well as saying that Power Metal sucks.

There are top notch musicians in every single genre; to say that one single genre has THE best musicians is narrow minded and simply ignorant.

Chuck Schuldiner was a fuckin' genious. The musicianship in Emperor is not from this world. Blind Guerdian's A Night at the Opera is astonnishing, it involves some incredible musicianship as well, and then we have Ayreon's Human Equation, another great example of what incredible musicianship is. So please people; if you prefer one genre more than the rest, like in my case Black Metal, that's OK; but I also love other genres; so please don't be narrow minded fucks.

If it were true that a band would use sung vocals given the opportunity, explain Opeth (which is also one of the most talented bands around, and what they play is certainly not power metal. And I can't think of anyone whose vocals can match those of, say, Chuck Schuldiner, John Tardy, and of course Varg.

Which of course is not to say extreme vocals are more difficult than clean ones by any stretch of the imagination; they just take more than "no talent, just a bit of training and endurance." Note that I'm aware the quote referred to hardcore vocals, which I can't do myself so I couldn't tell you what it takes to do them, this statement was more my feelings on the situation HumanTorch presented.

Yeah these guys are the next Metallica, they suck just as bad. You call it heavy metal...but its so modern that I can't manage to stifle the vomit. These guys jerk off with their instruments and produce dribble. There's no spirit behind it. My aim is not to offend anyone but to perhaps enlighten them. Granted opinion is the word here but come on, if this is what metal has degenerated into than I say fuck it. I'm going to stick to my vinyl and listen to only albums that I know wont suck. My quest for new music, however, will not include anything after 1990, as almost everything sucks, and I own the ones that dont. These guys need to quit as well as Arch Enemy and pay homage to CORONER OR DARK ANGEL WHO WILL RULE THEIR PUSSY SOULS! I know I offended some people, and I await your insults. Fuck off fags!
