I love this album a lot, imo every song nails it. Cedric said he'd fallen in love with the pop song writing the album and that makes sense. The songs stick fairly strictly to pop formats with less meandering between the verses and choruses than on their earlier albums. On one hand, I miss the exploration, but on the other goddamn is this catchy, groovy, heavy, beautiful, intense, and all sorts of fun.

Zed and Two Naughts reminds me a lot of Conjugal Burns and Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt. A bit of an "album finale" formula showing.

Almost completely agreed, Noodles. Great album, my favourite since Amputechture. And I actually disagree with you about the lack of exploration. This is still pretty adventurous stuff.

Anyway, I'd give it an 85.

Same here, same rate.
I love how TMV manages to reinvent itself on this one.

I'll have to check it out. I was big into TMV up through Amputechture but I'll check this one out.

It's very, very different. Still great, but don't be expecting anything along the lines of the first 3.

It's like Mars Volta with the Muse sound. And it works... most of the times.

Cedric uses the term "long-winded" in this interview which I think is a better one. I feel like the songs are pretty concise compared to Tetragrammaton or Cassandra Gemini or smth.

Oh yeah, I completely agree that the songs are more precisely focused than the grand explorations of the past. No doubting that.

But I think there's still a lot of layers to each track, and the material is certainly not something I'd refer to as "safe" in a modern rock context. They're still making an effort to be fresh and original.
