Your review is bang on. Fragments of Form and Function is one of m favorite technical death album of the last decade so my expectations were sky high for Formshifter.
I agree with pretty much everything you said. The album is still good , melodic and technical but there is a bit too much guitar wankery and some of the songs suffer from it as a result. Solos also tend to sound a lot like each other which makes parts of certain songs sound very similar. A couple of songs even have a bit of a filler feeling which is something i never noticed on Fragments.
That said i still like the album but i think they went a bit too far with solos and technicality. Now i love both of these aspects in metal but in the right proportions.
Behold , Tartessos , A Path Disclosed , From the Stars Death Came and Secret Of the Sequence are still pretty fucking awesome tech death songs though
