We haven't had one of these for quite some time. Do make your list more that just a list and please elaborate on your explanation so posters can have clear idea as to why this or that band is a favourite with a rational behind it. These kinds of threads can enlighten one with bands they have ignored or forgotten. I'm not going to say a list of ten or fifteen or whatever the case might be. It's at your liberty. Discuss!

anathema-weather systems. just beautiful. its my go to album after working 10-12 hours a day. i have one of those little speakers that plug into my ipad or iphone and play it while im in the shower. as far as signifigance idk if it really has any beyond what i already stated. its mellow and pretty and it relaxes me.

the old dead tree-the perpetual motion. this album is just amazing in my opinion. its got some great riffs and leads and the vocals are amazing and the way his accent comes thru in the lyrics is endearing. ive tried to listen to the other 2 albums but they didnt resonate with me. need to give them another go. havent heard their demo yet. another beautiful album from start to finish. unfortunately this band is no more.

royal thunder-cvi. just an awesome album and totally one of my favorite bands at the moment. seeing them again on thursday. as for the album its got female vocals and she can sing. lyrics are gritty and personal. the guitar work is fantastic. anyone who likes jess and the ancient ones and christian mistress should check this out. while not as 70's inspired as the two i just listed this is along the same lines.

ghost brigade-until fear no longer defines us and isolation songs. both are great albums. ive talked about them before. they have some great lyrics.

40 watt sun-the inside room. just amazing in my opinion. patrick walker writes some amazingly personal lyrics that resonate with me. im always on the lookout for music that makes me feel something (usually depressed). this does the trick.

warning-watching from a distance. again patrick walker. amazing lyrics. alot of people say this album is more depressing than 40 watt suns inside room but i disagree. this is depressing dont get me wrong but not as depressing as 40 watt in my opinion.

pallbearer-sorrow and extinction. these guys sound like they listened to alot of warning. musically anyway. lyrics are way more uplifting though. good doom metal. worth checking out if you like doom. also this is one of the few albums tehom gave his stamp of approval to...

Saw Royal Thunder two weeks ago open for Pig Destroyer. Shit was good.

yeah man. they are really good live. i met the two guitarists 2 months ago when they played with pallbearer and they are super nice. really cool guys. i wanted to meet Mlny or melnie (apparanty she removed the vowels from her name) but i felt funny especially after talking to her husband for like fifteen minutes. this time im gonna try and get them to sign an lp. i dont have a record player but ill frame it. great people. made me like them even more than i liked them before.

La Dispute - Jordan's lyrics are really great. His vocals are rhythmically creative in the sexiest way. Production on their albums is perfect. Riffs are amazing. Songs are linear but not just one idea after another - holy fuck do they build up to climaxes. They write the best loud music with electric guitars there is, but songs like "Nine" and "Fall Down, Never Get Back Up Again" and "A Broken Jar" show they're just as good doing whatever they want.

These Arms Are Snakes - Basically everything I said about La Dispute applies to them except they're less emo and more weird. Steve Snere's lyrics don't always make sense, there's moog synthesizers, and sometimes there's dance beats.

The Mars Volta - They blend catchy and obnoxious/destructive better than anyone else.

Grammatics - Starting to think all my favourite bands do kinda similar things with their music. I find Owen's singing, melodies, and songwriting very impressive for reasons I'm not smart enough to articulate.

Trophy Scars - Another favourite that fits pretty comfortably under the (loose) genre of post-hardcore. Clever lyrics, unpredictable songs, great melodies, concept albums, all that fun stuff I love.

The Middle East/The National/The Fugitives - Catchy songs, beautiful singing, clever lyrics. Basically all I want from music these days.

Max Roach - He did bebop better than anyone with Clifford Brown, then he went beyond that, pushed jazz forward, and kept destroying worlds.

I second Snake's mention of Ghost Brigade. Such a terrific band. They bring some of the best sludgy yet melodic riffs I've heard followed by gorgeous melancholic melodies. I don't know, it's nothing groundbreaking but the combination works so well. Great live band too. The singer's clean voice could've been better last time though, it was lacking a little. Whether that was due to just having a soar throat or bad practice, I do not know.

Anaal Nathrakh is one of my favourites as well. Once again, it's highly personal, just another example of a combination of sounds (black metal, grindcore and those terrific soaring vocals) that tickles a certain dark, filthy spot inside me. And there's still not a single band that sounds like them, at least as far as I know. If anyone can prove otherwise, feel free to do so!

Fucking Finsterforst dudes. Why? Well you can mostly read it in my review of their upcoming album, but these guys are simply amazing. Haven't heard a lot of their old material but Rastlos alone is enough to make them climb up on top of my list right now. I always keep going back to this magnificent album, and I even prefer them over Moonsorrow right now which have been in my top 3 the last couple of years.

Overkill - When I first get hooked on something I get hooked for a long long time, and The Electric Age forcefully made itself a part of my everyday ever since.

for me music doesnt have to be groundbreaking. it can follow a formula as long as its done well. lyrics mean more to me than originality. ghost brigade is a competant band with great lrrics and musicians. if another band came out today that followed GB's formula and had lyrics that i could relate to id listen to them as well.

people in general always shit on bands that may have some elements that have been rehashed. if they are rehashed poorly then they deserve to be shit on. (not directed at anyone on this site).

another thing i dont undersdtand sometimes is this... someone says i like band x's 1st album, i say band x's 2nd album is great as well. someone says ahhh i have the first album thats all i need 2nd album is just more of the same. ????? then does somone even really like the band? if the music is different and the lyrics are different yet it still sounds like band x didnt band x accomplish what they set out to do???

perfect example of a band that rehashed old ideas but did it well is rapture. totally sounds like brave murder day era katatonia. i like brave murder day era katatonia. no brainer. rapture has 3 albums. i bought 1 liked it then bought them all. i like them all. they are all different enough to be different albums but similar enough to be the same band following the same formula.

idk know why im ranting. i havent had much sleep this week.

Iron Maiden - Do I have to say why?

Immolation - Who says nothing is impossible? As far as I know one thing that is impossible is for this band to release a bad album. Solid musicianship and anti religion lyrics with class. Immolation is one of those bands where you know a lot of thought has been put down to writing the lyrics to the songs. Thought provoking stuff. Music wise, the unpredictability and heaviness just blows me away every time. None of their albums ever get old.

Carcass - Probably the only band whose grindcore albums I can listen to (grindcore isn't my cup of tea). This band's riff mastery is the main reason why I love them. Plus Jeff Walker was among the best.

Sinister - One of the most underrated DM bands. Short, straight forward DM songs, although they later started having longer ones. It's hard to pinpoint what exactly appeals to me about this band, but I just love them.

God Dethroned - I liked every phase of this band. This band combines heaviness with melody in a very distinct way. There might be other bands that do it, but GD was the first band that I listened to that did it and they became one of my favs after Ravenous.

My favorite band of the moment is Finsterforst. Only heard the second album, but it's so beautiful, full of spirit and emotion. I can't wait to hear the new album that Thomas reviewed. If what he said is true, it's gonna be the album of the year for me.

I listened to isolation songs 4 times between the way to court and the way home and goddamn. There's not a single bad sond on there. I think I love ghost brigade need to give guided by fire a try now. I have it but only spun it once.

Bottom line!! Ghost brigade is great. Fick all the naysayers. Finland is where it's at for music. I like Finland!

Pentagrammmm I m doing to sleep

I've been really digging low key stuff as of lately. A lot of drone or similar kinda stuff. Something that is midtempo or slower that I can listen to while reading. Enabler/Dillinger/PD/ANb/Converge/PtH all get plays when I want to break things, but my newest interests have been of the slower variety.

Obscure Sphinx, the review of which was uploaded today.

Dragged Into Sunlight, their latest album is entirely different than their debut. It's much simpler, less diverse, but easily more haunting and depressing. A really beautiful in a macabre sorta way atmosphere that stays with you.

Terra Tenebrosa, a kind of weirder sludgy doom metal that is rather minimalistic and evil sounding. They just create a really creepy atmosphere.

Locrian, a band that is somehow able to make drone sound beautiful. Very impressive stuff albeit hard to describe. I just imagine sunrises on ate up, dirty film.
