More or less filler or b sides from everything else they've ever done, maybe not as bad as some of the reviews from MA suggest but this band has more or less run its course.

You know when Chris gives a 59 it must be pretty bad.

At times, a sloppy effort. I have no problem with the pace or the meat of the songwriting. But when arrangements sound like they were slapped together at the last moment, and the vocals sound they were done by Adveser on a first take, I cannot abide by it.

Take out the worst 25% and you have an 82-83ish album.

Really? I usually put Chris's scores through a debipolarization filter as they often are way too high or way too low.

Fair enough, maybe I haven't been paying close enough attention.

I've seen him review a lot of albums he really liked, though.

I do not agree with the review. I see I'm a minority here when it comes to this record, but I love this band so much. I thoroughly enjoyed it and still do. Not as good as the s/t, Iron ( so love that one ) or From Afar, sure, it contains three full blown ballads, yes, but after countless spins I wouldn't cut off any of these tracks. After initially being disappointed, the more I listened to it the more I liked it. No hard feelings, I see why someone, especially fan of the older records, would not be happy with it. Just my thoughts.
And why do so many people classify Ensiferum as melo death, they're not, powery folk metal would be more like it.

I have yet to hear this album, so I cannot comment on how bad or good I find it. I do want to say that From Afar is amazing and so is the debut, but IMO Iron is the best thing they have ever done. It's a definite improvement over the S/T debut. Some love for Iron is needed.

Good review and I also agree with the score, this is a little dissapointment to me. I love Ensiferum it is one of my favourite bands along with Turisas, Wintersun, Finntroll... From affar was one of the best albums of Viking Metal that I never heard, a bombastic masterpiece but this album... bluff. A lot of accoustic with mid-tempo songs, where is the speed? I like a lot "In My Sword I trust", which for me it's the best song of the album.
Sorry for my simple english, I'm learning it.

This is one of the albums I just love so much and I really don't know why you dislike it so much. So melodic and heavy as well.. I never liked this band but now I just can't stop listening to it(this album in particular) Well I guess it's just one of those things..
Stay heavy :dio:
Happy New Year!
