IKR! Think Jason wanted/needed to focus on his family and day job. That pic of him awhile ago with short hair was a strange kind of harbinger...

I figured Akercocke were done so I suppose this is good news. I'll have to hear the album; thanks for the review!

I think you captured the album wonderfully here, Mr. Goat, and my score is similar. The first 3 tracks, all among your highlights, are outstanding: Dnepropetrovsk and Fragmented Illustrations both have extremely infectious riffs and Eyes Become Black recalls Akerocke's Leviathan. Unfortunately, the album doesn't sustain that kind of momentum. I definitely miss Mendoca's occasional fondness for old school death metal riffs; instead the group seems more in favor of the Akercocke take on two famous French black metal bands for guitar styling. Also, a couple of the later tracks are flat out boring. Ultimately, however, "Words that Go Unspoken" comfortably remains in my top 10 for the last decade, and the flashes of that sort of potential shown on this album bring lots of excitement. Undoubtedly a transition album for the band to move beyond Mendoca, I'm hopefully they can release something truly great next time around.

Cheers! And yes, definite room for hope.
