Wow saw 100 and thought "must be a Chris review" saw it wasn't and still shocked!

Funny how Bathory and Amon Amarth have the same genre label as this band :)

Well-crafted power metal with a viking theme. Nothing special.

Edit: Listened to the title track some more. When I heard them sin 'Lost like a rainbow in the night" I was laughing out loud.

Hate to correct you. The lyrics are "I was lost like a raven in the night." If you're talking about the title track Valkyrja.

Yes, I just listened to it too. I think you write good reviews, Jared, but these really high scores are hard for old veterans of metal listening to accept. As Karma said, I heard well-crafted power metal with a viking theme, not sure how that translates to something garnering a perfect score.

Viking theme Nuclear blast Fest metal is an apt title for these guys.

Also lol @ fitting them in the same genre as Bathory. Quorthon would be sharpening his axe to crush into the skulls of enemy hordes, the guys in TYR and Turisas would be crying and screaming and killed by the bare hands of drunk Christian monks.

Much appreciated. I just really enjoyed this album more being the younger person on here I guess. It left a really big impact on me, hence giving it the best score possible on here. I've seen quite a few perfect scores for this since I have written this up, but that in no way justifies to anyone who has a difference of opinion that this deserves a perfect score. To me, this album had everything going for it, so in my personal opinion it just fit for me. Now this will probably be one of very few I give a perfect score....but I was bound to hear something that would've blown me away eventually. Maybe not to some, which I can understand why some older metal veterans could find this undeserving.

As for the genre, they obviously have a power/heavy metal feel to things with a folk/viking theme. Its just a label....but I always think "Viking" with these guys. This album in no way reflects a Bathory Hammerheart feel, but it still depicts Viking imagery in my mind, so it just felt appropriate. Labels I think have changed a bit as time has passed. Of course this is debatable.

I do highly respect this guy, especially after I saw him debate with Paul Watson of Whale Wars. Granted I was a bit shocked to see him on the debate online. But nonetheless a very intelligent guy.

Shit, sorry, I might've been misled by my prejudications towards the genre

Haha all good. I wasn't trying to be a jerk about it or anything. But I didn't want people to think they are singing about flaming rainbows

When I read your initial post, that was exactly what I thought you meant.

I wouldn't call it crap per se, I supposes it's fine for what it is, but 100/100? It's way too polished, light, and jaunty for my taste, so I'm perhaps no the the best candidate to criticize it.

I really don't see how much of anything could deserve a 100, but whatevs. No reason to get sassy.

Quite coincidentally, I was giving their earlier albums a listen. They have come in for a lot praise and my expectations were high. I've listened to 3 albums of these guys and there is not a single song or riff that interested me. The albums had a good production though. I'll pass this one unless convinced otherwise.

Fantastic album, but as everybody else has pointed out, this is not a 100/100 album, but i would give it 85-90.

Sadly, I have hit my Tyr saturation point with their newer material.
