Well this was entertaining. My thoughts on Volbeat have been expressed already but to reiterate: uninspired, mindless riffs designed to set up hooks and nothing more coupled with dry, passionless, vocals is a recipe for soulless music.
There was one point in all of this I feel actually merits a more serious discussion and that would be "why memorable music should need a hook" the simple answer is of course it doesn't and there's many examples of that we can bring up. Anathema's Shroud Of Frost for example is a memorable track but there's no catchy or pop inspired hook in there. Songs can be memorable for a myriad of reasons be they the lyrics (as is the case with most of the music crafted by Pete Steele), the atmosphere (which is generally bleak in my favourite bands), melodies (circa Dark Tranquillity), or any number of other factors.
