Gotta agree with this score. Didn't read the review yet but this one was really underwhelming.

Tomas Lindberg's voice and lyrics give this band meaning and definition. I want more Lock Up with him. That album is phenomenal. The trademark rhythm techniques are there also. The trem picked melody lines followed by the sustained chords with abrupt stops. I love it. I missed it. The advantage a band has waiting twenty years is that they don't have to be innovative cause everyone just misses their sound. The Haunted's new one can't get away with the stagnant sound cause they are coming off a record that they were really pushing some boundaries on. Then they went back to the most boring sound of their career with Ardo. This is better than the Haunted, but Witchery always destroys both of these bands IMO.

The way I see it is that back when At The Gates cames out with their seminal record, and later The Haunted, there was a total shortage of good thrash out there. We settled for death-core shit, when we wanted a new thrash masterpiece.
Now there is no such need anymore, as there are so many kickass thrash groups out there.

I've been listening to this more and I guess I'd bump up the score to a high 70's or low 80's.

It's not an in your face record like Slaughter of The Soul and is almost somewhat relaxing to listen to like some of their older material.

TBH the first few tracks left me bored and I just turned it off. Unbelievable that this is the same band which created SotS.

Judging from the review it sounds like the listeners' tastes have changed more than AtG changed. Maybe if some of you listened to SotS again, impartially, you'd also wonder what the big fuss was about that album. And I'd look less 'stubborn'!

In fairness, I did listen to SotS a few times again while reviewing this, and it's by far the superior album and still kicks arse.

Seeing them with Converge in a week so I listened to their discography. This album is a bummer because at its best it sounds like... Slaughter of the Soul, and at its not-best it sounds worse than that. They did a great job of capturing what I like about SotS but idk... why?
At War With Reality is essentially a lesser version of Slaughter of the Soul mixed with The Haunted. It says absolutely nothing new
that describes it well

SotS gets worse with every listen. This band made two decent albums (The Red in the Sky, With Fear).

This album is filled with subtle melodies and structure, well organized, excellent lyrical content and interesting art work, dense, and even though, at times, the drummer is constructing not so complex beats, it's so well executed that it doesn't matter if he isn't playing polyrhythmic patterns. The vocal performance is decipherable and yet still remain extreme. The record is dynamic, yet still not in your face. As Husker mentioned, it remains a relaxed melodic DM album. My score: 78. Well done!
