I'll admit to being someone who generally ignored Rush but I never turned off their songs on the radio and I was quite familiar with 2112. Geddy's vocals were something I always had trouble getting past, but I have tremendous respect for their musicianship and consistency. Knowing what Rush means to Goat and another friend of mine has caused me to explore their music more deeply, and I'm quite liking what they were doing in the mid-80s on albums like Power Windows, Grace under Pressure and Hold your Fire. The softening of Geddy's voice, synths and influence from other bands (RS wrote of The Police and Siouxsie and the Banshees on Power Windows) all add up as positives for me. Thanks for sharing that well-written and touching tribute Goat. RIP Neil Peart.

Rush was a slow grow for me as well. None of the radio tracks really set my world on fire, so I didn't really bother with them much until my mid to late twenties. As I was to find, the real jewels in the Rush crown were buried just beneath the surface. Subdivisions made me believe in the power of synths, Red Barchetta made prog both cool and accessible and La Villa Strangiato convinced me of their combined musical genius. I was fortunate to witness the band on their Snakes and Arrows tour back in the late 2000s and they were nothing short of fantastic. Quiet professionals who had honed their craft to a knife edge. Peart exemplified that quality more than anyone and the more you dug into his life story, the more you couldn't help but admire him as a man. Excellent work on the piece, Zad. RIP to Professor Peart. You will be missed.
