Again, why is this not 'metalcore', rather than "New Wave"?

I chose that because they aren't Metalcore. For some reason everyone thinks that cause a band is from the states that they are Metalcore but that isn't always the case.

Agreed, I had heard them billed as Death/Thrash before but that was by ads in magazines with those little review tidbits by sites and publications I have never heard of. I have learned the hard way to take these with a grain of salt.

So when I stumbled upon the album and figured "Why the hell not?" I was expecting some run of the mill metalcore band with slight death and thrash elements. I was wrong. Instead I got a very nice cd of what I too would call death/thrash.

I'm glad you like the disc. Metal Blade have unfortunately singed a ton of new Metalcore bands that aren't that great (Winter Solstice come to mind) but they do also have some high quality acts on their roster such as these guys .

By they way, I don't get why you classify it as New Wave of American Death/Thrash when most of their influences are probably European.

The same reason people often refer to In Flames and Dark Tranquility as "Scandinavian Metal" in some form or another. It's a movement of sorts, located in a specific place, with less of a uniform sound than a unified ideal. Back then it was to add to and expand upon the largely american based death metal sound. Now it's the next step, the Americans are taking note of those additions and putting their own music out in response. It's American metal because that's where the guys who are making come from, simply enough.

As for the album, the horrendously, comically bad vocals mar what is otherwise a competent but unspectacular release.

So, after the IRS (Initial Reaction Subtraction) the album scores a 70... which still seems high, but either way, this album was overquoted by at least 20 points.

How long have you had the CD, a week?

No offense, I really liked their Metal Blade debut, but this album falls short of that effort in my mind, so it's gotta be a lil' overrated in this review.

Seriously guys, don't read too far into the quote. That's usually the last thing I decide on when I write and review and usually the thing I spend the least amount of time devising. In my opinion I'd rather we not even quote albums because people seem to get a little too hung up on them. When you actually think aout it, it's really ridiculous trying to rate music on a number scale, but I totally understand that it is necessary to a certain extent.

haha, no worries, I wasn't singling you out man. I've just noticed that people tend to argue about quote rather than actually discuss the review itself. I haven't heard their debut so I just took this album as I heard it.

it's because they discuss the quotes and don't actually really read the reviews...

I've been listening to the album for well over a month, and I still stand by my 92. I really like it.

I really like this disc too. It is a much more mature offering than their last which was pretty good. The vocals are by far the most improved aspect of this recording. They also seem to have found their niche sound. The blast beats are used in a way that fits the music and direction more than the last album. While anyone can throw in some of those nowadays, BDM seems to have found a way to make it fit with their riff attack. I'm quite satisfied with this disc.

A Vulgar Picture is awesome. From what I can tell, it's Thrashy Death Metal with some influences from Hardcore, and it works really well. I love the vocal tradeoffs.

I'm gonna have to pick this one up.

There is no fucking way this is death thrash. I've seen and played with this band and they are just another one of those swedish melodeth screamo "I dont really like metal" bands. This is crap and I wish you'd stop reviewing it. They are enemies of metal. They do nothing to further it. DOwn with The Black Dhalia Murder. Next time try reviewing something other than crappy mallcore screamo shit.

Sauron and Summon and Nocturnal Fear are American Death Thrash...so is Usurper. Not this band. If you insist on using lables.....make sure you use them correctly....you never know who might be reading.
