Lush and extensive vistas of a multitude of instruments which can be conduced to Big-Band Jazz, the Blues, a good measure of Swing, accompanied by Mr. Burrell, whose superior knowledge of chords and scales, in the aforementioned diverse genres, are played with a wisp of ease, and an intractable tenderness, a kind of gentleness, to his graceful axemanship, akin to a witnessing of feathers intermingling, and interweaved, with great elegance, and implausible automated playfulness, brought to bare with unseeming complexity.

A thoroughly modern treatment of the old 60's masters, Winehouse crafts frank, adult tales of lost love and personal anguish awash in lush, R&B shimmers and jazz orchestration. Never succumbing to pale imitation, every track on Back to Black feels fully realized and perfectly in synch from the opening stomp of Rehab to the wistful soul of closer He Can Only Hold Her. A brief but shining testament to a talent cut way too short by the same demons as her predecessors. One of the last truly great mainstream records.
