Is that the general consensus? I have SoND and it fuckin' rules! It is my first foray into the Immortal catalogue however. What else would anyone consider to be on par with or better than Sons?

SOND nas a better sound, but i prefer at the Heart of Winter for some reason.I'd give it 90/100.

if you like Sons of Nothern Darkness, you'll like Damned in Black too :) , i think. Pure Holocaust is less "heavy" more like in old vein... have to admit though that i haven't heard Heart of Winter  but my guess is they sound kinda similar

Pure Hollocaust > any other Immortal album.

I'd put Pure Holocaust equal to Battles in the North, but yeah I can't argue with Deathkvlt's position.

Of course those are black metal albums, At the Heart of Winter, Damned in Black, and Sons of Northern Darkness were either black&roll or straight up heavy metal albums.

Speaking on topic, did anyone else love the soft parts of the track Solarfall? That sounded incredibly cold!

I never thought they took themselves that seriously, at least by the later years. I remember an intereview when one of them was talking about the very intense process of putting on their corpse paint. It was pretty tongue-in-cheek.

I love them for their image, don't get me wrong. There's another forum I visit where they've practically built a cult around Horgh, the music just seems a bit rubbish, as I said above.

May be the cartoon like qualities of the singing.. but I think their music is top notch.

Great album! Well, my favourite release of those guys. SOND is a bit below the level of ATHOW. They really had good ideas to refresh theis style, change some things, add more Heavy & Thrash influenced riffs, create more space. Still the atmosphere is the same. Grim and frostbitten

Immortal can only truly be exprienced live. That's not true for a lot of bands, unfortunately.
