DARKTHRONE Refuse ALARM Award Nomination - Dec. 16, 2004
Legendary Norwegian black metal band DARKTHRONE, nominated last Wednesday in the "Metal" category for the highly coveted Norwegian Alarm Awards, have now been removed from the list of nominees.

DARKTHRONE, one of five candidates in the metal category for their album "Sardonic Wrath", communicated their dissatisfaction at being nominated in an article published in Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten the day after the selected names were released to the public. "We play real and honest black metal," drummer Fenriz commented in the article. "And we have no interest in being part of the glitter and showbiz side of the music industry."

Alarm Awards chief, Svein Bjørge, was surprised by the band's reaction but hasted to find a solution that culminated in the band's elimination from the category altogether.

On hearing the news that their wish had been granted, Fenriz commented, "I just wanted to say my piece about the whole Alarm nomination thing last week and whether they kept us in or not would have been no skin off my nose."

"I have everything AGAINST awards for black metal," Nocturno Culto added. "What a fucking circus this has become."

"I am not against awards in general," Fenriz concluded. "I just thought it was not for us."

"Sardonic Wrath" is out now on Moonfog with promotion and distribution through The End Records in North America.

Always interesting, Fenriz and Nocturno...
One of the few last true bands from the second wave.
HAIL DARKTHRONE!

Thanx J !

Indeed...
but seriously, a lot of their contempoaries have strayed from the path in recent years, so to speak. Darkthrone has remained consistently uncompromising.

Constantly uncompromising would be better if their records hadn't been steadily losing steam since Panzerfaust.

Eh, this one bored me. Even moreso then Hate Them.

According to that post, they are against awards in their homeland, but not against production and distribution in America?

Nobody's giving them awards here, or really buying their stuff.

So I couldn't see why they'd have a problem.

Why would they not want to have distribution? It is not as if they are corporate by any stretch of the imagination... they are surely not going to get rich...
Besides last I heard they do not tour, either.
I heard Fenriz say that the difference between "true" BM and the others, is that the "true" have to have day jobs to eat.
Quality of recent material notwithstanding, Darkthrone are true to the end (so far!)
BTW, who the fuck is Nathan Gale and why does he deserve AIDS?

Guy who shot Dimebag Darrell.

Problem is, he's dead, and thus cannot contract AIDS. Which I why I propose a massive government project to bring him back to life, and then execute him again.

And maybe seven more times.

He can always be perpetually sodomized by satan, I bet satan has AIDS.
And Valefor, what do you mean one of the few bands that stay true? There are SOOO many good underground bands (listening to the new massemord right now, which is almost too true to be kvlt, and nachtmystium is another band like this, taake too, there are soo many!!)

I guess the difference between Darkthrone and other bands is that they have the strength of fanbase to propel themselves forward if they choose to, but they consciously decide not to.

that's true, but hasn't really got anything to do with this, unless you state that darkthrone is one of the few bands that remained true while being able to become popular... I think though, that any band can become "untrue" if they wanted to, so there are a lot of bands that still stay true...

Well, I meant out of their time, place, (second wave, Norway) and prominence, i.e. Emperor, Satyricon, Mayhem,
Ulver, Gehenna, etc. They all changed.
Of course there are a lot of true, underground BM bands out there, but only a handful from the second wave, that I can think of.

Back then, loads of underground band were demoing and releasing their first album, from moonblood to abigor to vlad tepes...
If you want only norwegian bands I admit there are not too much, but how about ragnarök, aura noir, carpathian forest (are they from norway?), forgotten woods, Ildjarn, kampfar (admited: 1995), taake (yes, formed in 93!) and the line continues!

Moonblood had definitely staid true, but didn't they split up?
Abigor mellowed a bit, to my ears at least, Carpathian Forest (Norway), became some kind of hybrid...
is Ildjarn still putting out music? If he / they are and sound as raw as the early days I would have to say thats pretty fucking true, as that is some painful shit!
Ragnarok are alright, though I never really got too into them.
Anyway Aura Noir is too thrashy for me , and I never did hear Forgotten Woods, though I have heard of them...
any good?

Actually, Darkthrone starting from "Hate Them" album aren't true anymore :P

All the tr00 guys hate them now (especially they hate Fenriz with his new hobby), saying that it was a matter of time until noble Darkthrone would sell itself (but I don't care, I still LOVE them, as I love "new" Satyricon, Immortal, Enslaved, Mayhem and others  ).

Yeah, Moonblood splitting up sucks...
Have you checked out any Mexican / South American bands?
I actually think they have the best true BM around right now... totally raw and relentless and underground, they embody what Europian BM had in the beginning, sadly mostly lost nowadays.
If not, I strongly reccommend checking out the South American scene, like I said, I think it is the supreior scene right now.
I will have check out Forgotten Woods one if these days...
