Ghost Reveries is more like Still Life + Damnation.

I can only hope I agree with you after I listen to this one. Those are two great albums to merge.

It's just an opinion I have, which may or may not be shared. I think it comes closest to those two albums, but it isn't exactly the same. I've also only gotten around 7 listens in yet, which is of course little for an Opeth record.

Regardless, the thing that distances Ghost Reveries the most from the rest of the discography, is the keyboard. It doesn't make a huge impact, but it's nevertheless suddenly there after we'd gotten used to their usual instrumentation.

On the subject of the acoustic songs: they are clearly derived from Damnation, as they are also quite different from acoustic songs on earlier albums (Benighted, Harvest). While I think Damnation is one of the best albums in my collection, these new songs don't interest me at all. Somehow, they seem less inspired. A shame, really.

to many people commenting on this album! lol sorry i just skipped through pages 2-8, so ive missed most of the discusion. I picked up the album, any album with 140 somthing replies deserves a buy, plus cds are cheaper when there first released so i was like "why not." This is a great disc, idk how it stacks up agaisnt the older material because ive really never been huge on opeth. But this cd is very very good. This cd took at least 12 spins before i could rate the album. 90/100

If thats prog rock then I'd rather listen to WHAM

lol, why don't you all just start doing what I did and stop lisitining to them if you don't like them? They were awesome up to and including Still Life but something is missing now, I never heard more then one song off of Delivrance and same for this new album, just nothing there anymore. That said, there is about as much since giving them low scores and stuff by people if they hate them. Shit, if you gave me the entire Dark Angel, Death Angel, Forbidden and Holy Terror collections I would rate everyone of them about 16 or 30, but it doesn't really mean anything.

At least Opeth is better then Bay Area late 80's thrash or I would have to get all up in arms over them...lol

Sorry but late 80's Bay Area thrash is better for the most part. There were a lot of crappy bands, but since you're comparing only one band to the entire genre.....them I'm still right. Lets compare Opeth to Vio-lence, a late 80's thrash band, Vio-lence is both heavier and more energetic, and they never tread water in wankerdom like Opeth does. There is nothing contrived about their music and it doesnt lack the spirit that opeth does. So I think you're wrong, but you're using an opinion as fact, so there's no getting through to you.

And geez, I didnt read your whole post cuz it seemed stupid, but you listed Forbidden and Holy Terror as being worse than Opeth, I personally don't see it....at all. In Fact Forbidden and Holy Terror are two of my favorite thrash bands.....so directing that comment towards me is utterly useless. If you want an insult war I'm going to have to decline. I don't need to even argue this point. My beliefs are firly established.

Truly and utterly unbelievable album. Believe the man when he says that this album is in the category buy or die! I own all Opeth's albums except Morningrise and I can assure you that this is clearly among their best work if not the best.

If you are a fan, you can jump on it without any hesitation!

Funny you should say this, because actually their best record is indeed Morningrise. But then, as it's the only one you don't own I can forgive you for not knowing this, so long as you get it soon. 8) :P

i have an extremely hard time deciding which is the best opeth album.

i cant really say ghost reveries, even though its right up there. I'm still saying still life.
