But then you can say that about anything. "Take this Simple Plan riff, add a lot more distortion, speed it up a lot, and what do you get?"

Not really, take any of the riffs from "Sultans of Swing" (a favorite on this site  :D ) , add some distortion, speed it up, and what do you get? Certainly not thrash, but in the case of Whole Lotta Love, you do.

Also, the "Simple Plan riff"? No offense to thrash music, I like it as much as the next guy, but you don't have to be a virtuoso to play 95% of it. I was playing pre-Black Album Metallica riffs within a month of getting my first guitar.

Back to my original point. That Whole Lotta Love riff has all the hallmarks of what most people consider thrash. It's short, simple, to the point, features some well done palm muting for continuity and basically gets you (or at least me) pumped up.

Celtic Frost imo sounds nothing like the bands/genres everyone says they inspired or started, but I guess those genres would be pretty boring if they still sounded like they did back in 1985. Same would go for thrash, if it still sounded like 70's Zeppelin

Sobered: Yes, there are some elements of Whole Lotta Love that can be considered proto-thrash, but it definitely is not a thrash song as whole.

Well, I was only referring to the main riff really. I was driving down the road in my truck the other day when it came on, and was thinking to myself "damn, that kinda sounds like thrash" :P

Now I don't know for sure, simply because it was way before I was born, and i'm not that familiar with the underground bands of the era, but I'm going to come out and say that Led Zep released both the first Viking metal song ( Immigrant Song ) and the first thrash song (Whole Lotta Love).

I know neither song is obviously a dead ringer for the genres as we know them today, but honestly, the originals very rarely are.

The first thrash song is imo Queen's "Stone Cold Crazy"!But i agree with Immigrant Song;do you know Dark Angel's cover of this song?

i think we're all looking over one very important point here, we draw our influences form lots of different bands we hear so its a bit of Led and a dash of sabbath add in a pinch of Priest et voilà, cep way more complex, no sole person can be corwned the founder of metal, there are however some more influencial then others
