Nice review, man.. I'm about to give it an 85/100 but essentially I agree with what you wrote.

Well, that was one hell of a review man!! If there is someone that can translate music into words here then it's you!
Quote:
They have riffs as angry as the jutting, angular rocks that stick out of otherwise smooth cliff faces and high mountains.

That's just brilliant and I know exactly what you mean. Especially tracks like Forlorn Sea have such awkward structures: a dynamic base (the smooth faces), with very surprising and sudden riffage (the stones).

I've heard this album a lot times by now. I think the album has lot's of great stuff in it, but i always seem to get frustrated with the 3 first tracks due to the guitarplay, which keeps getting interupted by short "breaks" and the first 3 tracks sound a bit too much like each other in some ways... but don't get me wrong, the first 3 tracks also have some great stuff in them...

but only 75 from me....

Yeah, the sharp stones on the smooth hills. But I kinda like it and it gives the band a face.

Heard a few tracks from these guys and am not entirely convinced just yet...

I definitely agree with what you said about the depth and variety of the production, and the diverse parts do seem to weave as if all part of one tapestry- more so than Opeth, although let's not discuss that here...

Sometimes the overall sound just seems a little bit cluttered, as if the ideas need a bit more focus. I will definitely listen to them some more though, and see if it grows on me.

Aaron, you do good work. Just out of curiosity, why did you stop to compare this album to Opeth, only to negate making fully clear your stance on Opeth? I only bring this up because I didn't recall you disliking Opeth, and though one could come to the assumption quite easily, a quick blurb about where Opeth fails for you (and a firm personal opinion) wouldn't have hurt. Such an adjustment would save this review some points for newbies, without affecting your stance with the old guard. A rare miss, but still informative, and above MR.com average. You really remind me of myself when I was your age.

Uh... thanks for the subtly condescending reply, OFC.

In any event, I hate Opeth. That's where I fall. They're a terrible band that everyone loves for some reason that I couldn't possibly begin to fathom.

Hope that clears everything up.

Come on, the only condescending part was that I said you reminded me of myself.

I'm aware of that, it's what I was referencing.

Hmmm... perhaps I should have included an emoticon. An emoticon would've cleared that last post up. People love emoticons.

Oh.

Never mind the hostility, then. But please, refrain from the 'you remind me of me when I was your age' remarks. To be honest, that goes for everyone.

It's irritating in person and moreso over the net.

I am currently laughing at this, because it is funny and I refuse to use emoticons.

Oh, and thanks for all the kind words, Gast and everyone else. I really happen to like this album quite a bit more than you guys, wonder why?
